Sandra was a dedicated wife, mother, sister, aunt, and grandmother. She was born on April 23, 1954, in Manhattan New York. As the daughter of an Army soldier, she was fortunate enough to have lived in many places in the United States and abroad.
The family settled in San Antonio Tx in 1975, where she completed her bachelor’s degree in education. She fell in love with James Smith and was married in 1981. She gave birth to her only son Ismael Smith in 1982. She became a widow not long into the marriage and committed herself to becoming a mother.
Sandra had a passion for teaching; she especially loved working in the field of early childhood education. Her career spanned 30 years where she accumulated many awards to include teacher of the year, her most coveted award.
Sandra was creative, intelligent, funny, with the biggest heart. She would give you all she had if you needed it. She loved to draw and passed that gift to her son who made a living from it.
She had many gifts but took pride in caring for her family and the many animals she accumulated over the years. The menagerie of animals included dogs, tortoises, birds, rabbits, iguanas, and even at one time a chicken. She also loved spending time in her back yard tending to her animals, plants, and flowers. She her mother and granddaughter spent many hours enjoying their time together there.
Sandra experienced a lot of tragedy in her life but persevered with her enormous strength and belief in GOD. She loved spending time with her granddaughter and giving great advice to her nephews and sisters. She was a very insightful person and understood the nature of people very well.
Sandra was preceded in death by her loving son Ismael and parents Henry and Emilia Khan
She is survived by her sisters Clarice and Barbara, her brother Yusuf, her nephews, Brandon, Julian, and Gencie, her granddaughter Elyssa and her great niece and nephew Kamila and Koah.
We will miss Sandra and she will remain forever in our hearts.
