Colonel Robert Dean Brumley, USA, Retired, died April 7, 2013. He was survived by his wife Billie Ruth Brumley by one day who passed away on April 8, 2013. He was previously married to Viola Johnson Brumley who died in 1998.
Col Brumley was born on May 26, 1919, near Ada, Oklahoma. His family subsequently moved to Arizona and then on to California where in February 1941 he entered the United States Army.
He retired from the Army at the end of 1970, his service having spanned World War II, Korea and Viet Nam. Colonel Brumley served at various posts in the Continental USA as well as duty in North Ireland, England, France, Germany, Austria, Korea, Japan, Hawaii and briefly, in the Philippines and Puerto Rico.
During his service Col Brumley received various awards including the Legion of Merit, the Bronze Star Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, the Army Commendation Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters, and the Combat Medical Badge. He was a graduate of the University of Maryland and an avid golfer. One of his proudest post retirement accomplishments was his part in organizing the Fort Sam Houston Men’s Golf Association. He was the association’s first President.
Also after retirement, Col Brumley organized and operated a tax service company which served a limited and select clientele in San Antonio and Suburbs. He felt that the tax work kept him mentally active and he enjoyed the close relationships with his clients.
After selling his business, he enjoyed volunteer work at BAMC for several years. He also wrote and had published a number of articles and stories which appeared in various service publications and newspapers. A visitation will be held on Tuesday, April 16, 2013 from 5:00-7:00 P.M. at Colonial Funeral Home. Graveside service will be held on Wednesday, April 17, 2013 at 10:30 am at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery with full military honors. In lieu of flowers friends may wish to make a donation to a charity of their choice.
