Amalia Mejia Davis came singing into Weslaco, Texas, on November 4, 1941. This served Amalia well as the director of the youth choir of the Randolph Air Force Catholic parish for almost 50 years. Amalia’s life always revolved around love and sharing her skills and knowledge with anyone who would listen and especially with children. Amalia worked as a Special Education Assistant for 13 years before obtaining her degree in Bilingual Education from UTSA; after which, Amalia taught kindergarten at Fort Sam Houston Elementary for 14 years.
An avid lover of art, Amalia could always be found sculpting, jewelry making, painting, sewing or repainting garden sculptures or pillows she deemed the wrong colors. As the wife and mother of Air Force service members, Amalia had the chance to travel and live in Europe, spending time in Germany, England, France, and Italy (always managing to find someone she knew anywhere she went) and living in Morocco and Spain. When friends, family or random strangers came to San Antonio, Amalia was the first to offer to be a tour guide to all things in the city. Later in life, Amalia and her daughter, with the help of 206 Tours, participated in pilgrimages to Fatima, Lourdes, Spain and Greece. Amalia loved the beach, or any water, really, and had to dip her toes in it (even risking a fine to dip her toes in the Trevi Fountain in Italy).
Her husband, Roger Davis, spent over 60 beautiful years with her, knowing that if they got in the car, they would have to stop for food. Along the way, Amalia and Roger had 3 children: Amalia Ann, Roger,Jr. and Victoria (deceased) and 4 grandchildren: Patricia, Victoria, Kira and RajLee. Amalia is remembered with love by more people and family (whether related by blood or not) than could possibly be mentioned here. Amalia passed away peacefully in her sleep with her husband by her side and surrounded by love—even if we all couldn’t physically be there—on February 8 at 7:49 AM.
While the end of Amalia’s life is sad, her family is comforted by 80 years of stories, good memories and love that has always been shared by and for her. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you take time to smile and continue to spread Amalia’s love and joy with those around you.
