George N. Russo, 90, passed away peacefully on Sunday, November 29th, in Summit, NJ with his loving children by his side. George was born in Newark, NJ and resided in Union for over 50 years before moving to New Providence, NJ in 2016.
George was a proud veteran who served in the 49th Field Artillery Battalion of the United States Army during the Korean War from 1951 to 1953. After returning home from the war, George met the love of his life, Audrey, whom he married in 1956.
George began his career in 1950 working in the mailroom at Bell Telephone Laboratories. George went to school at night where he earned his MBA from Rutgers University. After earning his degree, he continued to move up in the organization ultimately retiring from Bellcore in 1991 as the Director of General Administration.
George was a caring and compassionate person and devote Catholic. He had a passion for playing cards, reading, and watching sports – especially his beloved Notre Dame. After retirement George and Audrey enjoyed spending winters in Florida, taking long walks, and traveling the world with their life-long friends Lou and Pam DiProfio. George’s family meant the world to him and spending time with grandchildren was what he loved the most. George will be missed tremendously by all who knew and loved him.
George is preceded in death by his beloved wife of almost 58 years, Audrey (nee Stout); his beloved parents Enrico and Emanuela Russo; two brothers: Louis and Ernest; and four sisters: Francis, Fay, Mary and Esther.
George was a loving father who is survived by George Russo, Jr and his wife Cynthia, Karen Diorio and her husband Ray, and Janis Goldfeder and her husband Mitch. Known best as Grandpa and Pop-Pop, George is also survived by his adoring grandchildren George III and Jonathan Russo, Ray and Katie Diorio, Jessica and Jason Goldfeder. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Holy Spirit Roman Catholic church, 971 Suburban Road, Union, on Friday December 4, 2020 at 9:30AM. The entombment will follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, E. Hanover, NJ. The family will receive family and friends at McCracken Funeral Home, 1500 Morris Avenue, Union, NJ; December 3rd, 6-8PM.
