Edward R. Saunders, 91, of Union, New Jersey, passed away on Saturday, March 30, 2019. Edward was born to the late Vincent and Julia Saunders in Irvington, New Jersey. He attended St. Leo’s grammar school. Following graduation from Irvington High School he enlisted in the military and proudly served as a marine. He was a truck driver for Shallcross Express until his retirement in 1990. He enjoyed helping others through his involvement in the Union Elks B.P.O.E 1583 where over the years he held various positions including that of Exalted Ruler. He successfully organized many annual blood drives. He was proud that over 40+ years he had personally donated more than 20+ gallons of blood to help those who needed it. In 1968 he first wore a Santa suit for a Cub Scout holiday party and became hooked on bringing joy during the holiday season to others. He continued this holiday tradition for decades at the Elks special children parties, at the veterans VA hospital in Lyons and at the homes of friends and families.
Edward was predeceased by his brothers Walter and Jack.
He is survived by his loving wife of 67 years Elizabeth (Betty); son Edward, Jr. (Dr. Brenda Bourassa); daughters Judy and Nancy; grand-daughter Jackie Gravitt (Kyle). He will truly be missed by all who knew and loved him.
