Kathleen Marie Weis (nee Suess), 81 died peacefully on July 9, 2024 at the Villa Marie Claire in Saddle River surrounded by her loving family. Kathy lived a life rich in faith and family. Born and raised in Jersey City, Kathy attended St. Michaels High School in Union City before beginning work in New York City as a secretary. Kathy was happily and faithfully married to the love of her life Gerry for 52 years, before his passing in 2016. Kathy is predeceased by her parents Oscar (Pop Pop) and Margaret (Mimi) Suess. Kathy was very involved in parish life at St. Michaels Monastery during the 1970’s and early 1980’s. Kathy would host an annual Thanksgiving dinner in her home for the Passionists priest throughout the years. Kathy could also be found by Gerry’s side running the Church carnival, leading prayer groups, or at St. Michaels gym, Roosevelt stadium, on the sidelines of the sports fields and at many other memorable events with her grandkids. She found a new home at Sts. Joseph and Michael Church in 1983 and was a member of the Sacred Heart Society and volunteered for many of the ministries at the parish. Kathy was proud to be one of the original lay Eucharistic Ministers ordained by the Archdiocese of Newark. Kathy worked for the Passionist community at the Sign Magazine in Union City for over 10 years, followed by working as a teacher’s aide at Jefferson School in Union City before retiring in 2015.
Anyone who knew Kathy well knows that she loved her family deeply. She is survived by her daughter Doreen Vogl and husband Tom, daughter Kathleen Allen and husband Greg, daughter Christine Weis-Garcia and husband Rich, and son Gerard and wife Jenn. She was the cherished grandmother to seven grandchildren, Kevin and Kailey Vogl (and fiancé Blaze Kelly), Brandon and Lauren Allen, Bryanna and Aiden Garcia, and Riley Weis, her only sister Elizabeth (Liz) Kwasnicki and husband Greg, many nieces, nephews and grand nieces and nephews. Kathy was lovingly cared for by Jackie Molinari, Caresa Sampson and April Leist-Wadle, and her Saturday night church buddy, Patrick Allen. Kathy’s life was joyfully celebrated in January 2023 where she was the guest of honor at her surprise 80th birthday party by her children. Kathy was always one to welcome a good time. Kathy travelled to Europe with Gerry, Liz, Greg, and her parents. She most recently enjoyed a girl’s trip with her sister, daughters, and nieces to Nashville, TN, a Mother-Daughter trip to Orlando, and a family and friends cruise to Bermuda where many funny memories were made. Kathy enjoyed frequent walks along the Hoboken waterfront, family vacations at Sunnybrook farm in the Catskills, and trips to Atlantic City, and Sights and Sounds in Pennsylvania with Liz and Greg.
Kathy lived in the same house in Union City for over 55 years and was affectionately known as the Mayor of West Street. She loved her yard and house but more importantly, she loved welcoming family and friends, including furry friends into her home, whether for a cup of coffee, a treat, or simply a visit to just say hello. Kathy will be deeply missed by all who knew her and will be remembered for her genuine friendship, constant smile, gentle kindness, unwavering faith, and profound love for her family.
Visitation will be at Leber Funeral Home, Union City on Monday July 15, from 4pm to 8pm. Mass of Christian burial will be held at 11:30am at Sts. Joseph and Michael Church, Union City with internment to follow at Holy Cross Mausoleum in North Arlington, with a repass to follow.
