John Macum Phelan age 64 passed away August 16, 2011 in Longview. Born November 19, 1946 in Paris, Texas, he spent most of his childhood in Tyler. He graduated from Robert E. Lee High School in 1965 and attended Tyler Junior College. He spent 4 years in the U.S. Navy, after which he returned to Texas. He was very proud of having served his country as a Vietnam veteran.
He spent the last 20 plus years in southeast Tennessee and north Georgia. Recently retired from Shaw Industries in Dalton, Georgia, where he worked for a number of years, he decided to return to Texas, his home state, where he wanted to spend his retirement years. Golfing and fishing were two of his favorite pastimes. He was an avid football fan, the Dallas Cowboys being his favorite team.
He was preceded in death by his late parents, Walter and Cynthia Phelan.
Johnny, as he was called by all, who knew him, is survived by daughter Laura Marie Phelan, and son, Anthony Cort Phelan, and two grandsons, Landon and Adrian. He is also survived by sister, Katherine Jolly of Signal Mountain, Tennessee, brothers Wayne Phelan (Janet) of Sour Lake, Texas; Pat Phelan (Nancy) of Tyler, Texas, and Mike Phelan of Longview, as well as several nieces and nephews.
A Celebration of his Life will be held on Tuesday, August 23, at 10:00 am at Tyler Memorial Funeral Home, Tyler. Inurnment will take place at a later date at Cathedral in the Pines Cemetery, Tyler.
