Funeral Services for James Alton Murphrey, 87, of Tyler are scheduled for 11AM Wednesday, September 13, 2017 at the Bethel Baptist Church with Pastor Phillip Wheeless officiating. Burial will be in Bascom Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6PM –8PM, Tuesday, September 12, 2017, at Lloyd James Funeral Home.
He passed away on September 10, 2017 in Tyler.
Mr. Murphrey was born on January 25, 1930 in Canton to the late James Allen and Ibera Murphrey .
James grew up in the Tundra community just outside of Canton. He served in the US Army from 1952-1954. After his military service, he married the love of his life, Jewel Miles. He then moved to Tyler, where they lived for 63 years. He worked for Jim Holley Buick, Carrier and Wal-Mart until he retired at the age of 82.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years Jewel Murphrey; sister Francine Dawson and husband Robert; sister-in-law Marjory Hall; and many nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers-in-law Gene Miles; Gerald Miles; Larry Miles; James Hall; father-in-law Ernest Miles; and mother-in-law Irene Miles.
Pallbearers will be John Emmons, Billy Morris, Bobby Morris, David Jones, Harry Brown, and John Gerdes.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice of East Texas 4111 University Blvd. Tyler Texas 75701.
