AGladys Elizabeth Burrill, 92, of Galveston, formerly of Tyler passed away January 19th at UTMB Hospital in Galveston, Texas. She was born July 17, 1918 in Renfrow, Oklahoma to Lloyd R. Brockus and Candie A. Brockus.
During WWII, Gladys, like many American women at that time, worked in an airplane factory in Wichita, Kansas as a “riveter”. After the war, she met and married Owren Dale Burrill in Alva Oklahoma. He later retired from the U.S. Air Force as a Lt. Colonel.O. D. and Gladys moved to Sterling, Colorado where he was an administrator at Northeastern Junior College and Gladys ran the College Book Store. The couple moved to Emerald Bay in Bullard where O D. enjoyed golf and Gladys enjoyed games and Mah-Jong with the ladies at the clubhouse. After O. D.’s death, Gladys sold their home and moved to the Hamptons, a Senior Retirement Community in Tyler. Recently Gladys moved to the Meridian Senior Retirement Center in Galveston.
She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother Lloyd R. Brockus, Jr., her husband, Owren D. Burrill, and a nephew, Lloyd R. Brockus III.
Survivors include two nephews and their wives, Clifford E. Blevins, Jr., and Audrey of Bayou Vista, Texas and Larry L. Blevins and Mary of Tyler, a niece, Carlotta Morrow of Alva, Oklahoma, many great and great-great nieces and nephews and a great many lifelong friends.
Graveside services are scheduled with Tyler Memorial Cemetery & Mausoleum for Saturday, January 29th at 2:00 P. M. under the direction of Tyler Memorial Funeral Home with Pastor Mike Ford of Bethel Baptist Church officiating.
