Sidney Davis, Jr., age 81, of Tuscaloosa, died Dec. 10, 2010, at Merrill Gardens of Northport. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Monday at Heritage Funeral Home with Dr. Donald Payne officiating. Burial will follow in Tuscaloosa Memorial Park with Heritage Chapel Funeral Home & Cremations, a Dignity Memorial Provider, directing. Visitation will be from 2 hours prior to services at the funeral home. The body will lie in state at Heritage Funeral Home.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruby Davis of 58 years; parents, Sydney and Sadie Davis; brother, James Howard Davis; and nephews, Ricky Keller and Henry Syring.
Survivors include his daughters, Sandra (Gary) Watkins and Lynn (Tommy) Godwin of Tuscaloosa; son, Glenn (Debra) Davis of Tuscaloosa; sisters, Sara Powell, Mary (Curtis) Lee, Jean (Joe) Foster, and Peggy (Billy) Lewis; brothers, Edgar (Evelyn) Davis, Charles (Cornelia) Davis, Clarence (Doris) Davis, and Albert (Louise) Davis; sisters-in-law, Edna Davis, Shirley (J.W.) Cunningham, and Anne Dockins; grandchildren; Eric (Teresa) Sprayberry, Chad Sprayberry, Chris (Caroline) Sprayberry, Amy (Jeff) Woods, Kimberly Godwin and Jessica Godwin; and great-grandchildren, Sydney Kate and John Evan Sprayberry, Matt Bolling, Terrence, Jordyn, and Josh Lucas, and Mary Glenn Woods.
He was employed with the City of Tuscaloosa Fire and Rescue Service and retired after 31 years and also retired with 10 years of service with B.F. Goodrich Security. He and his wife, Ruby, instilled into their three children the importance of God first and the love of family.
Pallbearers will be Eric Sprayberry, Chad Sprayberry, Chris Sprayberry, Alan Davis, Chris Colson, and Jeff Woods.
Honorary pallbearers are employees of Northport Medical Center-DCH Rehab Unit, Sandra Pierce, Carl and Mary Davis, Amedisys Hospice Services, Kathy, Cindy and Teresa, Harry and Betty Stone, Danny and Cheryl Wallace, Meagan and Trevor, Oleta and Lenford Godwin, UA CCHS Institute of Rural Health Research and member of the West Alabama Emergency Medical Services Community, past and present employees of the Tuscaloosa Fire and Rescue Service, past and present employees of B.F. Goodrich, staff and employees of North Star EMS, James and Doris Stewart, Dr. Steve Lovelady, and Dr. Elwin Crawford.
The family would like to recognize Merrill Gardens for making a special home for their dad. The garden house family became dad's own extended family as well as ours and will always have a special place within the hearts of the Davis family.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Forest Lake Baptist Church or Caring Days.
