John William Duncan, age 94, of Tuscaloosa, died July 11, 2011, at Northport Medical Center-DCH. Services will be 11 a.m. Friday at Heritage Chapel Funeral Home with Dr. Herb Thomas officiating. Burial will follow in Tuscaloosa Memorial Park with Heritage Chapel Funeral Home & Cremations, a Dignity Memorial Provider, directing. Visitation will be tonight from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Gurtha Lee Duncan; daughter, Margie Ann Duncan; father, John Henderson Duncan; mother, Dulcie McCracken Duncan; brothers, James Harman Duncan and Harold (Dabney) Duncan; and sisters, Margie Dean Duncan and Mildred Orlean Prescott.
Survivors include his daughter, Susie Duncan Hewett; son, William Kenneth Duncan; brother, Hubert Ray Duncan; grandchildren, Kimberly Daseke, Cynthia Ricketts, Amy Hoggle, Colt Porter, Miles Porter, and Fallon Hewett; and great-grandchildren, John Daseke, Matthew Daseke, Katie Daseke, Austin Ricketts, Trammell Ricketts, Morgan Ricketts, Madeline Ricketts, Meg Hoggle, Cade Hoggle, and Destiney Hoggle.
Mr. Duncan proudly served in World War II. He retired from the VA Hospital as a nursing assistant, was a homebuilder and farmer, and owned his own plumbing company. He loved his family and friends dearly and touched every life he came in contact with. He was a very special man and will be greatly missed by all.
Pallbearers will be friends and family.
Honorary pallbearers are Martinview Assisted Living and all staff, DCH Cancer Center (Dr. Hinton and Dr. Graham), Dr. Gene Alldredge, and Dr. J. de los Reyes.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to American Lung Cancer Society.
