Harold Wayne Caldwell

Harold Wayne Caldwell died Sunday, December 19, 2021 at 82 years of age. He is survived by his wife Nita Lowery Caldwell, son Mike Caldwell (wife Cathy), daughters Jerri Thweatt (husband Rod Dedrick) and Leigh Thweatt Green; grandchildren Ben Caldwell (wife Fai), Adam Caldwell (wife Caroline), Carson Thweatt, MacKenzie Underwood, Chandler Green, Coleman Green and Ollie Strickland. He is also survived by a brother-in-law Jerry Stephens and nephews Randy Stephens, Mac Stephens, Chris Stephens and Marcus Stephens and their families.

Wayne relocated from Nashville, TN to Tuscaloosa in 1958 to attend the University of Alabama and never left. While still in school he went into business opening Circus Minute Car Wash on University Boulevard. Through this he served much of the University and Tuscaloosa communities making many friends including sports personalities and local icons. Wayne then spent many years selling office supplies and other products. He served as sales person, manager and owner. He made lasting friends throughout the business communities of Tuscaloosa and surrounding areas. His last endeavor was Caldwell Enterprises from which he retired in 2013.

Wayne was a member of the Jaycees of Tuscaloosa being especially active with the organization and management of the West Alabama Fair at the fairgrounds in Alberta. He truly enjoyed his work with the children’s Christmas shopping trips each December.

As a member of the Army National Guard Wayne was federalized several times during the Civil Rights era. His most memorable experiences were being present at the University’s “Stand in the Schoolhouse Door” and his participation in the march from Selma to Montgomery.

Wayne was a dedicated Christian of the Episcopalian faith. He was active at St. Matthias Episcopal Church and most recently at Christ Episcopal Church. Both churches provided places of service and a sense of family for him.

His love of University of Alabama sports was well known. The season basketball tickets he had at Foster Auditorium granted him the privilege of selecting his seats when Coleman (now Memorial) Coliseum was opened and he proudly kept those tickets throughout these years. He also had season tickets for baseball, and football for many years.

A celebration of life will be held at Cypress Inn Pavilion on Saturday, February 26. 2022 at 10:00 am. Dress is casual. Please dress warmly according to the weather.
