TUSCALOOSA – Dorothy Lee Barrett Burns, age 94, passed away December 3, 2022. Services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, December 6, 2022 at Calvary Baptist Church with Joseph Robinson officiating and Heritage Chapel Funeral Home directing. Burial will follow in Tuscaloosa Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 9:45 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. prior to services at the church.
Mrs. Burns was preceded in death by her parents, John Barrett and Aline Johnson Wooden; and her husband, Amos Dennis Burns.
She is survived by her sons, Dennis Keith Burns of Freeport, Fla. and Barrett Allan Burns (Mary) of Tuscaloosa, Ala.; and grandchildren, William Brooks Burns, Barrett Blake Burns, and Mary Elizabeth Burns.
Dot was born October 24, 1928 in Brooklyn, NY. She grew up and attended High School in Evergreen, Ala., got her undergraduate degree at the University of Montevallo and her Master’s Degree from the University of Alabama. Her first teaching job was in Andalusia, Ala. Later Dot was recruited to Tuscaloosa, Ala. to supervise student teachers and to teach Home Economics at Tuscaloosa High School. She later served as Assistant Director of Continuing Education in Home Economics at the University of Alabama and was honored to serve as the President of Alabama Home Economics Association. Later in her career, Dot taught commercial sewing at the Tuscaloosa Area Vocational School. She was loved greatly by her family and all who knew her.
Pallbearers will be Walter Monroe, Ralph Lusian, Jeff Albright, Peyton Thomas, Brooks Burns, and Blake Burns.
In lieu of flowers consider a donation to Calvary Baptist Church and/or the Amos D. Burns Scholarship Fund of The Alpha Tau Omega Foundation.
