Tuscaloosa, AL - Connie Mae Self Webb, age 78, died on February 17, 2022. Connie was preceded in death by her beloved husband Dr. Darryl Lee Webb, her daughter Alyson Webb Mathews, and her grandson Jeffrey Todd Webb, Jr. Her parents, Clarence Douglas Self and Aileen Wright Self and her brother Michael Self also preceded her in death. Connie is survived by her sons, Jeffrey Todd Webb (Rhonda Ramsey Webb) and Lee Alexander Webb; son-in-law Timothy Mathews; granddaughters Ramsey Lee Webb and Myriah E. Wilder-Harton; grandson Jalone D. Matthews; her beloved uncle, L. Wayne Wright; her brothers Douglas “Bud” Self (Karla), Daniel Self (Karla), and sister Vicki Self Bailey (George Bruno); and sisters-in law, Lisa Self, Margaret Garges Webb and Betty Webb McDaniel; and many dear nieces and nephews. Miss Connie was born on February 26, 1943, in Birmingham, Alabama. Her father, Clarence Douglas Self, was serving in World War II in the European Theater when she was born. Her mother, Aileen Wright Self, took care of Connie, along with her beloved grandparents, Floyd and Bernice Wright. Her early childhood was spent between Clay and Birmingham frolicking and mischief making with her Uncle Wayne and her many cousins.
Connie graduated from Banks High School in Birmingham in 1961. At Banks, she was active in Student Cabinet, Student Council, Future Teachers of America, Boot and Tassel, and the school band. To say she enjoyed an active “social life” is an understatement, as Connie was certainly one of the belles of the ball, and loved to attend parties, dances, lead-outs, and presentations, including The Suitors Ball. She shared her love of dance with her father, Doug, and often talked about their special father-daughter date nights when he would take her on Saturday night dancing at the Hollywood Country Club or one of the other clubs her family belonged to in Birmingham.
After graduating from Banks, Connie attended Howard College, now Samford University. In her freshman Sociology class, she met the man who would become her one true love, Darryl, and their unending love lasted until his death in 2018. They first become “acquainted” when Darryl turned his desk around in the class to face her directly, because he was taken with her emerald green eyes, and her tweed suit. Nine months later they became engaged at the Sigma Nu White Rose Formal, and were married on September 1, 1962.
Following marriage, Connie helped Darryl complete his law studies and in 1964, they started their family with the birth of their first son Jeffrey, followed by Lee, and then their much loved daughter Alyson. Connie was a devoted, loving, fun, and imaginative Mother, who using today’s parlance, was always “present” for her children, and all her family.
After moving to Tuscaloosa in the 1970s, what originally was a volunteer, temporary role became a two-decade avocation when Miss Connie became the Mom’s Morning Out Coordinator and Pre-School Director at Calvary Church. Over those two decades, Connie provided hands-on care and love to so many children in Tuscaloosa who attended the programs, and was often described by parents as an integral part of “raising their children”. Her natural maternal character was a perfect fit for her in that role, and she could be counted on to provide guidance and advice to many young parents. Following her “retirement” from Calvary, Connie started for fun a business with her friend Jane Eads White, Sugar and Spice, crafting earrings and her other jewelry, and loved their time traveling around the state to different craft fairs, festivals, and Christmas bazaars, while their husbands found the nearest golf course. Connie’s final “career move” was serving as Holy Cross Lutheran Church’s preschool director—again asked by friends to step in temporary, but directed the program for three years.
In her “full retirement”, Connie relished her time with her grandchildren, Todd and Ramsey, and many beach trips with her husband, and friends. She also made the time to volunteer in her beloved Tuscaloosa Community, including at her children’s school, Woodland Forrest School, for the St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, and especially through her sorority, Epsilon Sigma Alpha, having served several terms as chapter president.
Following her marriage, Connie started attending the Baptist church of her husband’s faith, and was a fifty-year member of Calvary Church. Connie was a past member of the University Women’s Club, and remained an active member of the University Club. Connie was a long-time member, and eventually one of the owners, of Tall Pines Golf and Country Club. She loved her time there, especially attending the owner’s meetings, watching the golf tournaments, and attending the holiday barbecue socials.
Miss Connie was fun, fearless, and feisty. She was supremely kind, generous, and accepting of everyone. Her capacity for love was awe-inspiring. In spite of the many losses in recent years she experienced, Connie was never bitter, angry, or resentful. She always retained her humor and ability to laugh, and found the joy in the everyday. She was pragmatic and unwavering. She enjoyed talking to her friends on the phone, crossword puzzles, Sudoku, jigsaw puzzles, and non-stop reading, especially cowboy romance novels. Miss Connie could be counted on for sage advice, a little mischief, and always a sparkle in her green eyes.
Connie was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, daughter, aunt, and friend, who deeply loved her family, and her God, and savior Jesus Christ. She was blessed to have many loving friends, from all walks of her life, and will be missed by all who knew her, and experienced her love. Honorary pallbearers are Margaret and Eric Wilson, Sara and David Thompson, members of the Guyton Fellowship Class of Calvary Baptist Church, and members of the Tall Pines Golf Club, LLC. A memorial service will be held at Calvary Baptist Church, Friday, February 25, 2022, at 11am, with family visitation immediately preceding at 10am. In lieu of flowers, donations are encouraged to The Todd Webb Scholarship Fund through the Central Alabama Community Foundation, or to a children’s related charity of your choice.
