José was born in 1959 to Jose and Maria Antonio as one of the 9 children, in the City of Catofe, Quilbala, Angola, Africa. His Family immigrated to the Açores in 1975 to avoid the revolutionary war that was happening around them. His first job was working on the roads (fachina) in Açores. After spending 11 months in Açores, the family immigrated to the United States in 1976. José went from working on dairies milking cows to working in a nursery. He then worked doing repairs and maintenance as a mechanic and his final job as a Truck Driver.
José was a caring and hardworking man. He was smart, funny, and enjoyed being social. He was always willing to help others that were in need. If you needed advice, he would give you advice. He loved telling stories to his grandchildren. He enjoyed camping, fishing, and entertained himself by making his moonshine and aggravation board games. He will be dearly missed by all who knew him.
José is survived by his spouse of 42 years, Lina, his 6 children, Ludgero Alves, Bryan Alves, Sonia Vitorino (Drual), Joe Alves (Lilliana), Anthony Alves (Marlene) and Kelly Alves, 13 grandchildren, 6 brothers and sisters, Manuel Machado (Mary), Norberto Machado, Maria Peterson (Ron), Iriclia Machado, Elsa Vieira (Steve), Nelson Machado (Lisa), 26 nieces and nephews, and 28 grand-nieces and grand-nephews.
