The world lost a kind, gentle and caring soul when Madaline Braun passed away peacefully at the age of 96. She was born Madaline Ruth Wheelock in the town of Orange, Vermont, on September 11, 1916. Madaline graduated from Spaulding High School in Barre, Vermont, and later received a B.S. in Home Economics from the University of Vermont at Burlington in 1938. After graduation she taught high school home economics for two years and then became a security guard at the Pratt and Whitney Aircraft Company during World War II. Madaline met Maurice Bisson when he helped her change a flat tire and they were married in 1942. Her first son Peter was born in 1945 followed by her second son Michael in 1946. She served as a substitute teacher until the family moved to southern California in 1955. Madaline taught home economics and art at Moorpark High School in Ventura County and married Everett Braun in 1961. Her new family now included step-son Bob and step-daughter Barbara. The following year, she completed a Master’s Degree in Education from San Fernando Valley State College. Upon receiving her M.S., Madaline worked at Bard Tuberculosis Sanitarium for a year and then accepted a position as a student and career counselor at Ventura College. Her counseling job eventually culminated in her becoming Dean of Admissions – a position she occupied until retiring in the late 1970s. After retiring Madaline engaged in a wide variety of community service activities in Moorpark and was particularly involved in helping senior citizens. In the 1980s she served as President of the Moorpark Chamber of Commerce – a time when Moorpark was being transformed from a quiet town of a few thousand to a much larger and more dynamic community. Both she and her devoted husband Ev had a strong commitment to the Moorpark area and loved to be a part of shaping its future. Madaline moved to Olympia, Washington, in 2002, where she spent her remaining years before quietly passing on May 19, 2013.
Throughout her life Madaline had many interests. She loved to travel and was able to share many exotic travel adventures with Ev over the years. She liked being outdoors and around water. Above all, she loved to paint and became a prolific artist, especially in retirement. She delighted in entertaining friends and family, and all who made her acquaintance will miss the warm smile and kind manner for which she was known. Madaline is survived by children, grandchildren and great grandchildren who will miss her very much. She will be remembered at a service at Valley Oaks Cemetery in Thousand Oaks, California, on May 28, 2013.
The family suggests in lieu flowers that donations in her name be made to the Alzheimer’s Association https://act.alz.org/ .
