John Buck was born on January 13, 1950 at Ft. Lewis Army Base to Virginia L. and Jack W. Buck. As the first born son of a U.S. Army officer, John had the opportunity to live in various locations including Washington, Germany, Texas, and Alaska. Upon his father's retirement, the family returned to Washington. John graduated from North Thurston High in 1968 and shortly after enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps, where he served in Vietnam as a machine gunner. Following his honorable discharge, John decided to further his education. He earned his Bachelor's Degree, graduating with Phi Beta Kappa honors, from the University of Oregon. With his wife Susan and son Paul, John relocated to Tallahassee, Florida to pursue his Master's Degree in Social Work, once again graduating with honors.
After graduating, John secured his first employment opportunity at the Federal Veteran's Administration Hospital in Long Beach, California. Following a two-year tenure there, John and his family relocated to Washington State, where he embarked on a 33-year career with the Federal Veteran's Hospital at American Lake, dedicated to serving our esteemed and honorable servicemen.
John was a nature enthusiast who enjoyed engaging in physical activities, exploring new environments, and meeting interesting individuals. We made an effort to visit various locations that aligned with these interests. The Buck family consistently embarked on hiking adventures throughout the picturesque Pacific Northwest and Canada.
John was a versatile individual who had a passion for reading, a love for music, an appreciation for art, and a knack for learning foreign languages. He diligently prepared for our vacations in advance, ensuring seamless communication and smooth navigation in the countries we visited. His ability to effortlessly blend in with the locals never failed to amaze those he interacted with. Together, we had the privilege of traveling to various destinations such as China, Germany, Italy, Greece, Turkey, Australia, Tahiti, and the Cook Islands, creating unforgettable memories with my remarkable spouse.
John is survived by his loving family – his wife Susan, his son Paul, his Grandchildren Alyssa Stacy, Makayla Buck. John was predeceased by his – parents, Virginia and Jack Buck, Grandchild Rachael Buck, Sister JoAnn Shanafelt Buck.
John lived his life with enthusiasm, sharing his love with family and friends, exploring new destinations and experiences. His journey was an incredible adventure for all of us. What stands out most significantly in my heart is John's dedication to his career as a social worker, constantly using his natural gift to assist others. We miss having John physically with us, but we will always cherish the years of love, care, and dedication he generously gave to each one of us. You are always remembered with love.
