Charles William, “Bill,” age 80 of Tumwater, WA, died of a heart attack Saturday, August 11, 2018. Bill was born on October 24, 1937, in Bay City, Michigan, to Albert F. and Helen S. Nolet. He was the oldest of six children, having two brothers and three sisters.
He attended a Catholic seminary boarding school during high school and in May of 1957 he enlisted in the Army National Guard, where he was commissioned as 2nd Lieutenant, served as a tank driver, and was awarded a marksman badge. In 1960 he enlisted in the Army Reserves and worked as an armor crewman and was awarded another marksman badge.
In 1958 he attended San Fernando Valley State College (now UC Northridge), while teaching English and math and coaching basketball and football at St. Ferdinand’s Catholic School. He graduated from college in 1963 with a BA in English and his teaching credential. He taught English at Sinaloa Junior High School in Simi Valley, CA, from 1963-1967 and Royal High School in Simi Valley from 1968-1979 and coached football and wrestling. He retired from teaching in 1979, moved with his family to Olympia, WA, and opened a tax preparation and accounting business, one of the first computerized tax preparation companies in the area.
He became an Enrolled Agent (EA), Accredited Tax Advisor (ATA), and Accredited Tax Preparer (ATP), and devoted his life to providing an extraordinary service beyond compare. He enjoyed his work and never wanted to retire, so he faithfully and diligently ran his business until his death.
Bill had an incredible work ethic throughout his life. He built two homes, remodeled several others, and did countless hours of physical labor of all kinds to improve the lives of those around him. He could fix anything from plumbing problems to electrical issues to broken down cars. He had a passion for helping others and following his grandsons Josh and Jake’s sports careers and stepson Charles’ auto racing accomplishments.
He enjoyed his dogs, bowling, the ocean, boating, cooking, and watching the Mariners. He was extremely intelligent and a life-long learner. You would be hard pressed to find a subject that he couldn’t teach you something about, and along with his great mind, came a great sense of humor, which his family thoroughly enjoyed. Bill was a wonderful husband to his wife Crystal, who he married on May 14, 1990. He was a generous and devoted father and stepfather and a loving, thoughtful, and selfless Grandpa. He was kind, encouraging, strong, and compassionate and deeply loved his family.
His memory will live on, and he will be greatly missed by all those he showered with love and devotion and poured his life into. Bill is survived by his wife Crystal Nolet; his sisters Jeanette Scott, Alene Gallegos, and Cathy Sorenson; his brothers Robert and Jim Nolet; daughters Jenni (husband Gene) Straughan, Jacki (husband Vince) Cook, and Jodi Hedges; his stepsons Charles (wife Christina) and Shanon Meadors; his grandchildren Josh and Jake Straughan, Brandon and Amanda Hedges, Caleb, Hannah, and Isaac Cook, and Hunter, Justice, Jasmine, and Sampson Meadors; and his great-grandchildren Aiden and Adelyn Hedges and Robert Meadors.
He is preceded in death by his parents, his mother-in-law Mary Hurd, and his stepson Robert Meadors.
A private memorial service will be held for his family at a later date when his ashes will be scattered over the ocean.
