William E. Wilhite Sr. was born in The Stork’s Nest – Tucson, Arizona to Ernesto Sanchez and Eva Foyle (Sanchez) Willhite in 1933. He is preceded in death by both parents and stepfather Theodore Willhite, and by his sisters Ernestina Rundle and Alicia McDowell. William is survived by his wife Flora Rose (Robinson) Wilhite married for 68 years; his children William E. Wilhite Jr. (Kerry), Janice Rose Wilhite, Charles Michael Wilhite (Annie), Joseph Keith Wilhite, and Glenn Allen Wilhite; his 11 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren, and 1 great great grandchild; his brothers James Willhite, Benjamin Willhite, many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
William was a loving and charismatic family man. He instilled a good work ethic in his family, core values included fairness, honor, and respect. People gravitated towards him and everywhere he went he was able to strike up a conversation and generate laughter with anyone nearby. He was truly a funny man. His special interests and hobbies encompassed staying in touch with former shipmates, friends, and family. Enjoyed working on vintage vehicles – “Retired” at age 80. He had Faith and Trust in Jesus Christ.
Williams work history - March 1951 enlisted in the US Navy at USN TC San Diego, CA - after 22 years service, William retired as Chief Engineman at NIOTC Mare Island, CA, returning to Tucson, AZ and hired as a master mechanic at Bill Breck Dodge, later he contracted with DPS and retired in 1994.
His Naval career included assignments at Commandant 12ND San Francisco, CA, USS Teaberry AN34, USS Thomas F. Nickel DE687, USS Park County LST1077, USS Rogers DDR876, NALF El Centro, CA, USS Markab AR23, COM RIV RON 5 RVN (Vietnam), NIOTC (Instructor) Mare Island, CA
William received during his Naval career the following medals/awards: Bronze Star Medal with Combat V, Presidential Unit Citation, Combat Action Ribbon, National Defense Service Medal 2nd Award, Vietnam Service Medal with 4 stars, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, and Good Conduct Medal 4th Award.
He will be greatly missed by family and friends.
A visitation for William will be held Friday, January 6, 2023 from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM at Funeraria del Angel South Lawn, 5401 South Park Ave, Tucson, AZ 85706. A funeral service will occur Friday, January 6, 2023 from 1:00 PM to 1:45 PM, 5401 South Park Ave, Tucson, AZ 85706. A graveside service will occur Friday, January 6, 2023 from 2:00 PM to 2:30 PM at South Lawn Cemetery, 5401 South Park Ave, Tucson, AZ 85706. A reception will occur Friday, January 6, 2023 from 2:30 PM to 5:00 PM, 5401 South Park Ave, Tucson, AZ 85706.
