Tommy F. Gin, 73, a lifelong Tucson resident, passed away with his family by his side on October 5, 2024, after a year-long fight against cancer. He was born on April 20, 1951, to Bock Sing Gin and Shang Oi Gin. He is survived by his sister May Gin (Kent Zimmerman) of Mesa, Arizona and his brother Danny Gin of Tucson. In addition, he will be missed by his nephews: Scott Zimmerman of Denver, Kevin Zimmerman (Gianna Miller) of Phoenix, Bryan Gin of Santa Barbara, California, and Derek Gin (Loren) of Tucson. Tommy is also survived by his grandnephew Avett Zimmerman of Phoenix.
Tommy loved sports and officiated high school football in Arizona from 1971 through 2022. He worked at the positions of Linesman and Referee. Tommy was proud of his colleagues in the Tucson Football Officials Association, and trained many others throughout his 51-year tenure. He was the first Chinese American to officiate an Arizona state championship game. Tommy will also be remembered by the community for officiating youth football, plus basketball and baseball. A lifelong Wildcat fan and alumnus, he assisted at UA football practices and games. Tommy will be known for his contribution to the sport and his sense of humor. At his request there will be no services.
