Rita Thomas, a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully on September 21, 2024, at the age of 94. One of eight children, Rita was born on July 2, 1930, in Tacoma, Washington to her parents, AT and Lena Hughes. Rita’s long-life journey took her from the Pacific Northwest to Stockton, California, before she and her family came to Tucson, Arizona.
Rita was married to James Thomas and together they had 7 children. They remained married until James’ passing in 1970. Later in life, she found companionship with Joe Tolliver. They shared their love of gardening and remained together until his passing in 2017.
She is preceded in death by her parents, siblings Evelyn LeBlanc, Anita Hill, Rosalie Hughes, Delano Weaver, Henry Hughes, and Robert Hughes, and her children Richard Thomas, David Thomas, and Donna Mae Christian. She also lost contact with her last known surviving brother Milton Hughes.
Rita is survived by her children Mary Thomas, Alex (Hope) Thomas, Rosa Owens, Patricia Thomas, and James ‘JT’ Thomas. Grandchildren: Arthur Lee Williams, Sherrie (Ken) Watson, Rita Denise (Bobby) Turner, Tiffany Gant, Geoffrey Carter, Kevin (Tabitha)Thomas, Cedric Owens, Yvette Walker, Tamara Thomas, Helicia McHaney, Frederick McHaney, Ta-Tanisha Thomas, and Kimberly Harris, as well as myriad great-grandchildren and great-great- grandchildren. A special acknowledgement is given to Rita’s lifelong friends Rosemary Stephenson, her sister Cynthia Suba, and Artie Bravo.
Rita was known for her warm heart, generous spirit, and unwavering support for loved ones. She dedicated her life to her family, nurturing her children and grandchildren with boundless love and wisdom. She loved cooking, sewing, and crocheting. Her home was always welcoming and filled with laughter, delicious meals, and the aroma of her famous baked goods. Rita was also extremely active in supporting the A Mountain community and its’ residents.
Rita’s legacy of love and kindness will forever live on in the hearts of those she touched.
A memorial service will be held at Christ Kingdom Fellowship Church on October 10, 2024, starting at 10:00 AM, at 1736 W. San Marcos Blvd, Tucson, AZ 85713. Interment will be held at South Lawn Cemetery at a later date.
