Nellie is preceded in death by her husband, Jesus M. Valenzuela. Nellie is survived by her children, Nicanor (Sally), Rosemarie Quezada (Mario), Olivia Pesqueira (Ron), Jesus Jr. and Pablo; seven grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.
Throughout her lifetime, Nellie, has worked for various employers in Tucson, AZ. However, her greatest joys and memories were in her volunteer capacities at St. Mary’s hospital, various religious groups, and assisting in the creation of the Pascua Yaqui Tribe being federally recognized. Nellie also attended many of the activities provided by the Tribe’s Senior Center in which provided her much joy. Nellie was blessed with a beautiful smile, a caring demeanor, that made it easy for people to talk to her. She had the ability to communicate in English, Spanish, and Yaqui.
Nellie loved going outdoors to pray, meditate, or do her morning exercises. She loved sunny clear days and sat outside often to observe nature around her. She took pride on being independent. She enjoyed gardening, birdwatching, and caring for all types of animals. She has had rabbits, chickens, turkeys, tortoises, birds, dogs, and even one cat. She always wanted to heal them if injured or find them a home if they were lost. She took care of animals until she felt it was safe for them to go on their own. Nellie has always had dogs as pets, she would shower them with love and they in return were loyal companions to her until the end.
Towards the end of her life, Nellie knew her physical and mental abilities were declining. This is when she allowed her family to help her more with daily chores and responsibilities of life. She welcomed with an open heart the next phase of her life. Nellie died on December 24, 2022, with her family by her side. Nellie was a strong woman of faith and found comfort in the book of Psalms. She always carried her little prayer booklet in her walker so she could use it anytime she wanted to pray. My mom’s favorite passage was in Psalm 23. Nellie will be dearly missed by her family. Her family wishes to express their sincere appreciation to Casa Theresita and Casa De la Luz for the additional care and support for our mom in her final days.
