I will always be grateful for your mentorship and our friendship through the University and in all the years since. You meant a lot to me then, and you mean just as much to me now. You remain integral to my life and how I approach it.

I was lucky enough to be a student of Peggy's at the UofA in the early '90's. I took her intermediate painting class. She shocked me one day when she asked "What would it look like if you painted yourself as the biggest bitch in the world?" This is an important question for any woman artist, and it left an indelible impression in my consciousness. One time I proudly told her I had sold a painting. She asked "How much?" and I said "$50!" She said "Oh they got a steal." I protested, "But it only took me a few hours to paint it." and she said "How many years have you trained and practiced; how much work have you done so that you can now paint that in just a few hours? That's what you should be charging for." Now, 30 years later as a professor of art myself, I'm passing these lessons on to my students. Peggy, I will never forget you. Thank you.

I remember being excited to visit Tucson, see her (my Aunt Peggy), see her engaging house, and art studio, some works she was working on and Jiggs!  

Another New Year's Day photo - some of my favorite pictures of my mom. It was wonderful to spend that time with her. She loved the desert so. Her home. We would spend hours marveling over various plants and animals. Flowers, cacti, coyotes, javalina, hummingbirds, lizards, etc.. she  joyful. I hope she finds her herself surrounded by all of these things, wherever she is, and that she is filled with love and peace. I will miss her always, even more every New Year's day ❤️❤️❤️🌵

Although I only worked with Ms. Doogan periodically over the last 4 years, I loved visiting and helping her with the technical side of her life.  Her charm, wit and especially her salty adjectives for technical frustrations cracked me up.  She shared with me her artistic inspirations, her innermost thoughts on art & life, and never let up on the deadpan honesty.  My heart goes out to Moira, since a short 3 years ago I too lost my art professor Dad.  We both know that our respective parents' footprint on this world lives forever through their art.  
I just regret not being able to hug Ms. Doogan goodbye, one last time.  I'll be looking for her in my dreams. 

8/2/22. I knew her as Professor Doogan, and later, as our relationship progressed, "Peggy". She was an important member of my Thesis Committee in the UofA Art Department during the years of 1974-79. She was intense, brilliant, supportive, and brought a much appreciated warmth to my challenging but cherished years there in Tucson. We stayed in touch ever since I left for Virginia (where I've lived ever since). Only in the last two months was I wondering why she had not responded next to our ongoing email conversation, and, until today, I had not been informed of her passing. I met Peggy Bailey in the Fall of 1959.  We were both in our freshman year of our respective colleges.  We dated for the better part of a year, and then our lives eventually diverged.  She was lovely, smart, fiercely protective of family & friends, did not “suffer fools”,  and was simply one of the bravest people I’ve been blessed to meet.  We caught up with each other several times during the ensuing years.
When I think of her I hear Nat King Cole singing “Unforgettable “!

I would like to share an obituary that I have written for Peggy. It is posted on her website where you can view over 20 reproductions of her paintings and drawings from the 1990s and early 2000s. Peggy came to the UofA my junior year.  For the first time, I had a female instructor in the School of Art.  She was a breath of fresh air. Just the year before, I had asked the chair of the department if I could change my major from graphic design to painting and was told that "women don't become painters."  I checked the current edition (at the time) of Janson's "History of Art" and found no women included. Peggy changed all of that for me. She was, without doubt, the most influential instructor I had at the university.  Her teaching approach was inclusive. She was supportive of her students. Her own work was challenging on so many levels and I, for one, gravitated to that.  Besides being expertly executed in any medium she felt appropriate, Peggy did not waver on content. She always had a poignant message and delivered it superbly.  In the years after graduation, I loved visiting with Peggy upon return trips to Tucson. She was always welcoming.  I was blessed to have had the opportunity of showing her work at the Fresno Art Museum and the San Jose Institute of Contemporary Art, in my years as curator at those institutions. For those of us who were fortunate enough to have known Peggy, she will always hold a special place in our hearts.

I feel fortunate to have known Peggy for over 35 years, at first professionally as an art critic, later as a friend. We had many interesting conversations through the years, at first with me pen and notebook in hand and later with just the kitchen table between us. With Peggy's death, Tucson has lost one of its finest artists of the last 35 years, and I have lost a wonderful friend.

I worked with Peggy on several feminist art projects most notably the Women's Film Festival.  I live just blocks away and after our activist years would meet her in the hood and always slip and call her Peggy.  She would laugh and give me permission.  I still treasure my coffee mug with the Morton Salt Girls she designed.
I made a small contribution to TMA in her memory.  Wonderful artist who deserved the national recognition she received despite her difficult subject matter.    N. Skreko Martin

I was very saddened to hear of Peggy's passing. My first painting class while an art student at the UA was with Peggy, and that class inspired me to focus on painting for my degree and in life. I made sure to take every class Peggy taught, as well as independent studies. I'm not embarrassed to say I also had a student-teacher crush on her. Peggy was beautiful, inspiring, making me want to be a better artist and person, her attitude and work-ethic motivated me.  She was very kind and didn't let ego overshadow her achievements. Later, when I was working at universities outside Arizona, I'd visit Tucson and we'd get together for lunch, or hang out at her house-studio (a beautiful living/working environment). Unfortunately, I missed her 2005 retrospective, but during one of my visits she made sure to give me the catalog. After I moved  back to Tucson, we'd bump into each other at gallery openings and catch up on life, it was always a treat to see her, she was generous with her time. Last time we chatted was at a Davis-Dominguez opening in 2020 before the pandemic hit. I feel a bit sad about not staying in touch more the past couple years, but very grateful for her friendship, a gift that will continue enriching my life and others she inspired. My sympathies to family, friends, and the Tucson community for the loss of Bailey.   She and my late wife, Joanna Frueh (1948-2020),  were profoundly close friends and colleagues for decades.   I met Bailey only several times late in her life; at the memorial gathering for the late Minnette Burges, another close mutual friend and Tucson lawyer and supporter of the arts, and then again more intimately at the home wake for Joanna.  Aside from being an impactful master artist, Bailey had a warm, insightful, disarming spirit.  I treasure the too few  but real encounters we shared.  Her health problems were mounting and her abilities were failing, so I celebrate her life and passing.  I know Joanna would join me in saying “Godspeed Peggy, on to your next assignment. “ 

I have just a few memories of my Aunt since my family grew up on the East Coast and only visited a couple times to Arizona. 
My dad told me this evening that Peggy got married at the house I grew up in ( I just wasn't born yet).Nothing fancy, but a memory my dad told me of his sister. I remember being in her house in Tucson with Doogan and my cousin Moira and feeling like they lived such interesting lives, especially b/c all of the art around the house and her studio. I also saw Aunt Peggy at my my grandfather's 90th Birthday party, she was so incredibly dynamic and just such a wonder to talk to. Growing up I knew her of course as Aunt Peggy but also someone I admired for all of her accomplishments. I always told people close to me that my Aunt drew the Morton Salt Girl! It always seemed so cool to me! I wish I could have spent more time with her. I know she is at peace now. I know she will be greatly missed by many. 

I send my love to Moira and everyone who is grieving. We all know what a wonderful person she was. I would add that she was elegant without trying to be, as well as brilliant, lovely and funny. We were together for a time and I think never stopped caring about each other. I have many happy memories, though. Our first dinner when she served the bird with the sack of organs inside and I tried to eat them all, a drive to visit her parents for Christmas in a snowstorm that required pushing the VW too big a part of the way (I insisted we not turn back), my relaxing on her roof in DC until I was too scared to step onto the fire escape (she talked me down), a mind altering trip to Provincetown and others. I am proud to have earned an embarrassing mention in her “Logo Girls” essay. I wish I could have said a proper goodbye. Will always miss her. Best, Harold Appel

My funniest memory of my Aunt Peggy (NOW) is when I helped her move her stuff from Manhattan after a show.  She insists that I drive her little pink car from MD to NY, instead of my truck.  It is a snowy Saturday morning.  I get abused on 95, on the way, I get there and she is on the top floor of 5 with hundreds of the tiniest little steps I have ever seen in my life.  I get to the top and go in, so Aunt Peggy decides to start packing.  She gets out a box of Hefty Bags.  We get back to MD and the next morning all her oil was on the ground.  On her way back to Tuscan all 4 tires blew out.  It was amazing how things went, but I had a great time spending that much one on one time with her.  Living so far apart....it was a treat!!!!!!

 Mom, you will be missed. We love you and we always will. Thank you for those beautiful moments you spent with Moira and I. I will always remember the fart gun present you gave us for Christmas. It was the perfect gift, we laughed and enjoyed the moment. I will remember the many times Moira and I enjoyed having sushi with you for dinner. Or the many times you were brave enough to eat the lamb chops, asparagus, and corn that Moira used to marinate and I used to cook for you in the grill. We knew it was one of your favorites dinners. I will remember the many times Moira, you and I played cards (frustration) together. All those birthdays celebrations we had through all these years. I will always remember the many times we had the opportunity to see your art displayed at the art museum or local art galleries in town. I will always remember those beautiful evenings enjoying a glass of wine with you and Moira in your home with the dogs chasing lizards around your yard. I will always remember the many times you spent with Moira and I at Christmas exchanging presents, watching movies, and laughing. I will always remember the many beutiful times you spent with us in Silver City, Portland, and Mexico when you visited my family. 

I have so other beautiful memories of you and Moira laughing together and thinking how lucky I was to have you both in my life. Even though you are not with us anymore, you will always live in our hearts. Your legacy as the artist will live in the hearts of all the people who knew you and loved you. For me, you always be "the mom" as you always used to say in your phone messages to me...."Miguel...it is you mom"....

Tho we had known each other superficially for years because I had a friendship with her Ex and their daughter Moira, I only came to know her in a more personal way when I housesat for her one summer and had occasion to examine (and dust) her fireplace mantle collection of small "objets."  --an eclectic assemblage which gave her a more vivid and interesting personality for me to appreciate.   Ive long been grateful for that unique little opportunity to get to know Peggy, not entwined in other contexts but for herself.

I will miss Peggy in so many ways… celebrating holidays together, bimonthly dinners with Arnold during COVID years; laughs, shared stories, talking literature, art, politics and people…Peggy’s talent, wit, erudition, compassion and concern for me and others, added soul to my life. Thankful for having her. RIP  dear Peggy…

I greatly admired Peggy's spirit and incredible work. She was a role model for how to move with grace through a male- dominated world. She was truly unique and legendary. My heart goes out to you as you mourn her passing.
