"Shirley", as she was affectionately known to friends and family, was born in 1926 in Kingsport, TN, and grew up in Clinchport, VA. After graduating from high school, she attended business school in Knoxville, TN. She was a skilled typist and stenographer.
She worked for a contractor in Oak Ridge, TN, during WWII, and then was employed by various companies in Knoxville, where she met her husband Thomas Burdine. They were married in 1946, and moved to Atlanta, GA.
Shirley was a devout Christian and truly cared about others. Throughout her life she served her family, friends and community in many ways. She worked for years at Embry Hills United Methodist Church. At Embry Hills, she was very involved in activities of the church including Circle, Bible Studies and UMW. She enjoyed caring for her cats, walking with friends and traveling across the world.
She also, without hesitation, would always open her home to friends and family in need of temporary living quarters.
She enjoyed planning and cooking wonderful meals for the family, especially during holidays and special occasions.
She participated in volunteer work at the church and in her community. For decades, she volunteered at the local polls, among other things.
She is survived by her daughter, Angelyn Riaz (Jaleel) and son, Tom Burdine; five grandchildren, Madeline (Bob), Patrick, Jessica (Brandon), Kate (Sammy), and Keri (Drew); and 5 great grandchildren, Bowie, Jace, Aidan, Chaylee and Cooper. She was preceded in death by her husband Thomas, of 51 years, her daughter Patrice Haskins (John) and her parents Barbara and Samuel Miller.
A funeral service for Shirley will be held Monday, December 19, 2022 at 2:00 PM at Floral Hills Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 3150 Lawrenceville Highway, Tucker, GA 30084 with a burial to follow at Floral Hills Memory Gardens.
Shirley loved flowers, especially pink ones. The family would greatly appreciate any flowers sent or you may also consider making a memorial contribution in her honor to Embry Hills United Methodist Church.
