James Elbert Dacus, 99, passed from this world to heavenly realms July 2, 2024.
James was born in Forsyth County, Georgia, on March 4, 1925, to Grover Clevland Dacus and Della Pearl Dacus (nee. Mooney). James joined the United States Army in 1943 at age 18 serving in the North African theater of operations. He was a POW for 15 months, when released he continued in the army for several years. He received several medals including the Prisoner of War Medal.
James worked for the City of Atlanta for over 35 years with many of those as a Foreman of the Yard in the Street Department. When he retired, he continued to work including time at the Norcross post office and delivering flowers for a local florist.
He married the love of his life Velda Mae Koontz in 1945. They were married 71 years before her passing in 2016. He was a devoted and loving husband, a loving and generous uncle and friend who was known for his charisma and industrious work ethic.
James is proceeded in death by his beloved wife, Velda Mae Dacus, parents Grover Cleveland and Della Pearl Dacus and siblings, Lewis Dacus, Mary Elise Dacus Gilstrap, Montine Thelma Dacus Stafford, Eugene Dacus, and Margaret Lucille “Lucy” Dacus Page. He is survived by several cousins, nieces, nephews.
He will be greatly missed by all.
