Edith Ann Davis Nash, of Mount Airy, Georgia, passed away peacefully the morning of May 1, 2023. She drifted off listening to her favorite gospel music as she ascended the stairs to Heaven. Edith was born in Damascus, Georgia to Laura Olivia Calhoun Davis and Newman Mattison Davis on February 24, 1933 and was the 4th of 6 children. She was raised in Damascus and later moved to Atlanta, Georgia.
Edith attended Damascus High School where she was named Most Likely to Succeed and Best All Around. She was a competitive basketball player and went on earn a full scholarship in academics and athletics to the University of North Georgia. Loving education so much, she decided to double major in Education and Business Administration. Then, later, earning Masters in both Accounting and Education at the University of North Georgia and Georgia State University. Upon graduation, she worked in the accounting field for many years before feeling the pull of teaching. Edith taught in the Dekalb County School System from 1970 – 1988, where most of her time was spent at her beloved Henderson High School. She had such fond memories of the students, staff, teaching all the business courses, helping with Spectrum and handling graduations. While at Henderson, she was awarded the Dekalb County Teacher of the Year. She loved her Teacher’s Reunion luncheons and keeping up with her students’ years after they graduated and was always there to lend a helping hand with resumes, an ear for listening or continuing to challenge them to a typing test – her one hand against their two hands and she won every time. She was by far the fastest one handed typist and 10-key champion you would ever meet.
On February 3, 1963, she married the love of her life James Robert Nash and they resided in Tucker, Georgia for most of their marriage prior to moving the “The Mill House” in the beautiful North Georgia mountains. Briefly, they moved back to Tucker with Robin until Robert’s passing June 29, 2012. Edith and Robert were married just shy of 50 years. They had two children – Clay and Robin.
Edith was very active in her community, but her favorite past times were being Mrs. Claus and working alongside Robert and bringing so much joy to the children at Christmas time and being the world’s best Nana to Ashleigh, Hoyt, Bianca, Sara, Zachary, Jeremy, Jay and Jessica and at Great Nana to sweet Joanna. She loved all her grandchildren and lit up when she was able to see them, watch them perform in the many sports, vacations, artistic events or see them dressed up as they achieved their many awards and graduated from high school and college. She tried not to miss a moment of their accomplishments and wherever you saw the family, you were sure to see Sweet Nana.
Edith is survived and missed by her children, Clay (Jan) Nash – Zachary and Jeremy of Clayton, Georgia. Robin (David) Glass of Mount Airy, Georgia – Ashleigh (Joe) Rioux and Joanna of Tucker, Georgia. Hoyt (Nicole) Glass of Snellville, Georgia. Bianca Glass of Kansas City, Missouri.
