Carmen A Thompson

Carmen A. Thompson was born on November 22, 1931 on the island of Jamaica, W.I. to Mildred and Thomas Young.

She was the youngest of three daughters and two sons of a close-knit family. She grew up in the town of Kellits, in the parish of Clarendon. As the youngest of the family

she received the love of many immediate family members as a small child.

After High School she immigrated to the United States through Ellis Island, NY in the early 1950s. She met the love the love of her life, Robert G. Thompson from Harlem, USA, and married in 1954. In 1960 they moved to New Rochelle, NY with Albert Thompson (Grandpop) where they lived for 40 years and raised their family. They were part of a thriving community in New Rochelle, Rochelle Park, where life-long friendships were formed and maintained. In 2000, they moved to Virginia Beach, VA where they enjoyed their golden years to the fullest.

Professionally, Carmen earned her Nursing degree and worked with the elderly at the Home for the Aged and Blind in Yonkers, NY. She was very loving and caring with her patients. Her co-workers loved and adored her. She worked the 3-11 shift and managed her household, preparing meals every day before leaving for work.

Robert and Carmen moved to Virginia Beach in 2000. They were both very active in a church that they came to love, Covenant Presbyterian Church, which later merged with and became the New Horizons Presbyterian Church. Carmen was active in many ministries and served as a Deacon and was a member of the Women of Covenant for several years. She is remembered for her kindness and benevolent ways, volunteering her time and talents to the communities in which she lived.

Carmen’s health challenges with dementia slowed her down in her later years. She still maintained a loving smile and heart for all who interacted with her during this period. She was blessed with the care of a full-time nurse, Tracy Barnes, who devoted her expertise and talents to Mom’s comfort and overall health.

On February 14, 2023 Carmen closed her eyes for the last time. She leaves to cherish her memories her daughters, Dr. Imani Ma’at ( James Bernard), Arlene Fabio (Leonardo), Sonja Hill (Bryant) and Lisa Thourogood (Otis); Grandchildren: Bryan, La’Taya, Omar, Stanley, Michael, Nikkia, Bryant, Kellie, Kristen, Alanna and Salim; a host of great grandchildren, nieces and nephews, relatives and friends. She is predeceased by her parents, Thomas and Mildred Young, her husband Robert G. Thompson, and her son, Richard M. Thompson, her sisters Ivy Morris and Winifred Callaghan, and her aunts Sarah and Sue who helped to raise her.

While we mourn Carmen’s departure from this life, we rejoice in the memories that we share as she nurtured and loved her immediate and extended family. Carmen will be missed and remembered fondly.

A visitation for Carmen will be held Thursday, February 23, 2023 from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Floral Hills Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 3150 Lawrenceville Highway, Tucker, GA 30084. A funeral service will occur Friday, February 24, 2023 at 11:00 AM at Floral Hills Funeral Home with a committal service to immediately follow the service at Floral Hills Memory Gardens, 3000 Lawrenceville Highway, Tucker, GA 30084.
