A Tribute to Maggie Sullivan
Margaret (Maggie) Ann Sullivan was born in Omaha, Nebraska on April 11, 1956, to Michael and Dorothy Sullivan. She was a loving wife, daughter, sister, aunt, teacher and friend to many.
Maggie moved from Nebraska to Manhattan Beach in her early 20s to be near the ocean and attend college. She graduated from USC. She met her husband, Mike, in 1990 and they were devoted to one another for 25 years. He passed away in 2015 after 18 years of marriage. For 35 years, Maggie was a dedicated Special Education teacher in the L.A. Unified School District, forming enduring friendships that lasted a lifetime. She touched the lives of her many students and taught from her heart.
In retirement, Maggie found joy in traveling to see family, spending time with friends and giving back to her community by volunteering in AA service. She loved attending her daily AA meetings at the South Bay Alano Club and treasured the fellowship she experienced there. She considered her 39 years of sobriety one of her life’s greatest accomplishments and blessings. She loved her monthly trips to see her Aunt Helen in San Diego. She was an avid thrift shopper and delighted in finding just the right “rescue items” to give as gifts to friends. One friend’s grandkids called her Santa Claus because she drove a red car and always came with a bag of gifts.
Maggie died peacefully at Providence Little Company of Mary Medical Center in Torrance, CA. on November 27, 2024. She was preceded in death by her cherished husband Michael Welsh; both of her parents, Michael Sullivan Jr. and Dorothy Schoenborn Sullivan and by her sister, Sheila Sullivan Ertzner. Maggie was “Mom” to many feline babies over the years (Scooter, Lucy, Mauer and others) who have also passed on. Maggie is survived by her siblings and their children (c:), Monica Coffey (Dennis) (c: Sean (Erica) Keay and Peter Keay); Michael Sullivan III (Julie) (c: Michael Sullivan IV (Katie), Tony Sullivan, Patrick Sullivan (Ellie), Bobby Sullivan (Carly), Mayme Sullivan and John Sullivan; Maureen Sullivan Christiansen (Michael) (c: Megan Christiansen and Matthew Christiansen); Bernadette (Bunny) Sullivan Radachi (Mark) (c: Liska Radachi (Adam Schau), Nicholas Radachi and Catherine Radachi Chumley (Ethan); Sheila Sullivan Ertzner’s children: Emily Ertzner and Neil Ertzner (Haley); Mary Beth Sullivan Foral (Joe) (c: Marianna Foral, Joe Foral, Jr. (Tayla), Louis Foral and Ellie Foral; Erin Sullivan (Chris). Maggie is also survived by her grand nieces and nephews, Fiona and Devan Keay; Gregory Keay; Mikey (V), Carter and Cooper Sullivan; Owen Radachi Schau; Kinsley Jo Ertzner; Claire Jean Sullivan; Corie Cate Sullivan; Stella Elaine Foral. Maggie’s family also includes the many friends who have enriched her life with their support and encouragement over the years.
Maggie will be remembered for her appreciation for and compassion to those who considered themselves to be “broken people”. Over the years, Maggie and Mike opened their home many times to those without one. They gave generously of their time and support to those in need. They took great pleasure in being able to give back kindnesses shown to them by others in their own lives. Maggie leaves behind a legacy of redemption, healing and love that lives on in the hearts of her family and friends.
