Sybil Foster died in Toronto in her 94th year on May 15,2013. Born in Manitoba in 1920, she and her twin sister, Elaine, were the youngest of 4 children. She met Dick Foster in Ottawa at the War Department and they were married in December 1942. They had 6 children over the next 17 years, all of whom went on to excel in various aspects of the arts, medicine, teaching, business and chaplaincy. Her legacy includes 19 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.
Sybil had a pioneer spirit, and reminded us often of her Western Canadian roots. She was practical, courageous and generous with her time and friendship. She was a life-long learner and her biggest thrill came when she enrolled in university at age 60 and obtained her BA (English) in 1991 as a graduate of York University. She read widely, wrote with empathy and had a curiosity and acceptance of everyone she met. Having taught herself computer skills in her 80’s, she became the hub of the Foster family network. She loved bridge, golf, music and travel. She enjoyed learning new languages but she could always dispense her wisdom to us in any language. What Syb mostly loved was her family and friends.
She will be deeply missed by her children Kevin (Robin), Michael (Betty), Patricia (Jim), Susan (Bill), Stephen (Jane) and David (Jill), by her grandchildren Christy, Paul , Mark, Jim (Ramona), Barb (Tracey), Ken (Amber), Dan, Ryan (Miriam), Tim, Suzanne, William, Catherine, Richard, John (Jodi), Jim (Alyson), Patti Ann (Eric), Jennifer (Brian), Alexandra, Kirsten and great-granchildren Justin, Colin, Nolan, Jenna, Hunter, Riley, Ava, Judah, Sam, Vince, Gabriella, Frank, Ella, Sophie Sybil, Michael, Erin, Carson, Megan, Simon, Shawn, Kathy, Matthew and her entire extended family.
We will celebrate her wonderful life on Monday, May 20th, 2013 at 10:30 a.m.
at St Bonaventure’s Catholic Church, 1300 Leslie St. Toronto. A reception will follow the service. A private family interment will take place at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the charity of your choice in Sybil’s honour.
