Stephen Yeong-Shy Chen, as known as Fujita Eiroku, went to be with the Lord on November 9, 2024. Born in Hualien, Taiwan, on June 2, 1935, he was the 11th child out of 13 and his father worked in the lumber business in Hualien. Though his official records mistakenly noted his birthday as April 2, 1935, Stephen embraced the quirk with humor, celebrating both dates and delighting in the confusion it brought to those around him. After cultivating a budding romance through many love letters, he married Li-Fang Hwang in 1962. Later in 1968, he moved to Canada with his wife and two sons arriving two years later. Stephen is survived by his brother, Masao Chen; his sons, Timothy and Titus; and his cherished grandchildren, Katherine, Rachel, and Olivia.
A devoted servant of God, he earned his Bachelor of Theology from Taiwan Theological College on June 26, 1961; a Master of Divinity from Knox College on May 19, 1977; and a Doctor of Ministry from McCormick Theological Seminary on June 4, 2002. As a prominent figure in the Taiwanese communities in Taiwan and Canada, he served as the pastor of Taiwan Xindian Presbyterian Church and later at Toronto Central Taiwanese Presbyterian Church.
Beyond his ministry, Stephen enjoyed a variety of passions that showcased his creativity and craftsmanship. He lovingly tended to his bonsai, which he referred to as his “children.” He was also an enthusiastic winemaker and an animated storyteller, always eager to share a story with friends and family. His affinity for Japanese culture, shaped by his early schooling in the language, remained a lifelong interest.
In his later years, Stephen discovered a love for playing the erhu, a traditional Chinese string instrument. He especially enjoyed playing hymns, and one of his favorites being, Jesus Loves Me. Stephen’s life reflected a deep faith in Christianity, unwavering love for his family, and a commitment to the Taiwanese and Japanese communities he served.
