Stella Chappell (nee. Homaniuk) was born in Dauphine, Manitoba on May 8th 1933. Stella grew up and attended school in Fort Frances, Ontario. Stella was predeceased by her parents Anne and Nick, her brother Mervin, and by her husband Douglas who passed away September 11th, 2017. Left to mourn are niece, Donna, and nephew Dennis.
Stella moved to Toronto in 1950 and lived with her aunt and uncle, Olga and Nick Hovick. Stella was hired by Bell Canada as a long distance operator. She continued to work as a long distance supervisor until her marriage to Doug in 1963 and subsequently transferred to Montreal where she worked in Headquarters Statistics. After returning to Toronto on a transfer, Stella returned to LD operating and then moved to clerking in Budgets and Results and from there to the Engineering Group where later she took advantage of an offer of an early retirement package. Stella retired in 1984 with 34 years of service.
Stella assisted her aunt and uncle in the establishing of a summer cottage in Nappanee, Ontario. This meant many weekends of building, gardening and cleaning which she enjoyed after seeing the result of successfully completing the tasks at hand. Nick and Olga were a very close part of Stella’s life.
Stella’s activities, apart from looking after her husband Doug, was an active participation in the 48th Highlanders Chapter of the IODE of which she was a member for many years. Stella loved to cook and specialized in cookie making. She was noted for those special baked goods. When time permitted, Stella worked on a number of craft projects, which she enjoyed.
Stella and Doug purchased a new condominium in North York in 1995 and spent many hours planning its design and construction. When it was completed and they moved in, they were very happy with the final product. Stella and Doug enjoyed the condominium lifestyle very much and were in close contact with other residents.
In their marriage, Stella and Doug shared their love of traveling and went around the world twice. They visited China, India, Southeast Asia, Hong Kong, South America, North Africa and all of the Caribbean. They also toured Europe extensively.On August 29th Stella passed away at home with her caregivers of 6 years by her side; Maria Cherry, Cecil, and Jocelyn. A private Celebration of life will be held for Stella.
