I’ve enjoyed reading the recollections of my retired colleagues, Bonnie Wein and John Wilkins, especially as they relate to Barbadian rum.  I recall so fondly the dinner parties at the Pitt’s home and ours where rum was a feature which Romaine and I enjoyed. I still have part of a bottle of a special Cockspur rum which Romaine brought back from a cricket trip for me and in which he and I put a serious dent. When I see it, I think of him and miss his jovial, warm hearted company.
He was a very fine Judge but more than that, an excellent person.

Romaine and I , along with Sid Lederman, were sworn in together in June 1994. What a delight it was to get to know this kind, self effacing person . He was so encouraging during those early days when everything was so new and challenging, and helped me learn some of the nuances of civil law without having to ask more senior judges simple , probably stupid or basic , questions . 
Romaine had so much joy in his family, in cricket, and in fine rums from the Caribbean ! (I well remember his shock when Sid suggested adding Coke! ) 

Romaine was a  good man, an asset to the Court, and to the people of Canada whom he served so well.

As well, those “fishing trips” that bore more conversations than fish - Romain had a positive spirit and was an exceptional conversationalist. He was our Advocate until his appointment as Ontario Supreme Court Judge.  He will be missed – as a friend, forward thinker and true gentleman.

I will always fondly remember the surprise, delight and relief in our dads' faces on that Via Rail platform when they realized we had coincidentally become friends in residence at McGill; so beginning the next generation of friendship. Romain and I crossed paths in practice. It was not until Romain was on the
court that I got to witness and enjoy  his depth of character and rich  sense 
of humour.  He truly enjoyed telling me about his cases. He always  seemed  to attract strange and interesting cases that were fun to discuss. He took great pleasure in educating  me about the two greatest things, Grenada and cricket, in particular West Indies cricket and the famous cricketers of history. He actually made the game exciting  and the rules interesting.
Romain was a  scholar, a leading lawyer and a wise, patient and kindly
Judge who will be missed  by all who knew him.

The University College community at the University of Toronto mourns the passing of distinguished alumnus The Honourable Romain Pitt. 

For his trailblazing contributions to Canadian law, he was honoured with the University College Alumni of Influence Award in 2015. 

He remained an enthusiastic member of the College community, attending a student-alumni dinner as recently as last fall. He remarked that he enjoyed interacting with students because it kept his mind sharp.

This loss is keenly felt at University College and we extend our deepest sympathies to the Pitt family. 



Romain was a brotherfriend and soulmate.

We had known each other since the nineteen fifties and kept in contact ever since.  We partied together, travelled together and gave valuable support  to each other over those almost  seventy years.

He was my legal and personal Counsel and spoke to each other on a daily basis. His advice was always sage. Indeed we spoke the night before he left us.

His contributions to the Black Community, Toronto and Canada are Historical and Myriad.

My condolences to the Pitt family. He was such a caring Judge. Had the pleasure of working  closely with him at The Superior Court. I recently  saw him late last year at the Ardene Brunch.

Justice Pitt and I shared space before he went to the bench  and we forever were arguing and debating issues.  He sometimes sent me copies of "letters to myself "on issues which troubled him but he felt could not be published.  He had a deep sense that injustice needed to be confronted and remedied.  He never stopped being interested in economics, cricket(especially the West Indies Team) and the law.  He was my brother, my friend and will be deeply missed by his friends. He shared with us his  humor, his humanity and generosity.  A  great spirit and agile mind has passed our way.  

John and I send our deepest condolences.  We have many lovely memories of living next door to you and when sitting on our decks in the summer, hearing your laughter that would always make us feel that you were having much more  fun than us.   we shared some  great dinners where Romaine would regale us with stories in his inimitable style.  It is unimaginable what  your family is suffering through right now .  There are just no words for Jennifer and the children who are also having to deal with the terrible loss of Bill. I am writing this tribute still in disbelief that I can no longer call Romain to chat about anything under the sun, especially politics, Law and cricket.
Romain's passion, which I greatly admired, was always focused on those who needed help and the less fortunate among us.He would often lament that his life's profession was losing its ethical values and how difficult it was for West Indian Players to earn a living and still be patriotic at the same time.
Romain was the bigger brother I never had, who was always there to support me and helped to keep my family together.There will always be a place in my heart for him and I will miss him beyond words.

As a former president of the Ontario Black History Society,  my efforts to formalize the celebration of February as Black History Month at all levels of government, were inspired by the efforts of people like Justice Romain Pitt - a trailblazer.  
I was saddened to learn of the passing of Justice Romain Pitt.  During his long and distinguished service to the people of Ontario, he made history by being the first Black lawyer to be appointed to the Superior Court from his also historic first Black law partnership with Eric Lindsay (later with Victor Burke).  Pitt's connection to so many touchstones in the cultural heritage of Toronto include work with the establishment of Caribana, the Sickle Cell of Ontario Association and the BBPA.
My condolences to the family, the friends and those who have benefitted from his decisions and actions.

Robert & I share your loss at Romain's passing.Robert & Romain were good friends from their youth in Grenada , originally because their mothers were friends. Romain was a bit ahead age wise and they did not go to the same high school , as a matter of fact there was a rivalry between their schools.
The friendship continued and blossomed in Toronto and we were proud of our friend Romain , in all aspects of his life , as a person , a family man and in his career. We also became attached to his family , as did he to ours.
A major link to Robert's past has now been broken and sadly he is not fully aware of it.Another fishing buddy has gone ! No more solving the world's problems on the phone !
