Born in Montreal in 1958, Corby made friends easily, attending Thorndale Elementary and playing in the streets of Pierrefonds in the West Island. Corby thrived after our family moved to Ottawa in 1968. He was known for his athleticism, wit, creativity and charm. Corby lived life fully, enjoying the slopes at Camp Fortune, playing his saxophone, partying with friends, and slalom skiing on the warm waters of Lac Papineau at the family cottage. His passion for music blossomed during high school where he played the saxophone in the school’s stage band. Corby also played the flute and piano – he had a musical gift and a well-tuned ear for rhythm and melody. After high school Corby ventured west to work on the oil rigs in Alberta. After some time, he arrived back home to Ottawa in his Toyota truck adorned with a knotty pine cap on the back. He then decided to study recording arts at Fanshawe College in London in the early 80’s. His career brought him to Toronto, where he met Alison Jessamine, mother to his son, Miles. Corby lived in Toronto his entire professional career, and to quote a colleague who worked with him at Film House, “Corby was an excellent sound engineer and was kind to me when I was starting out…rare in the film biz. He was a truly nice man.” Corby worked on film sets and did post-production work for decades. He had the privilege of meeting people in the industry from all over the world and enjoyed sharing that with family! Sadly, Corby’s career faded into the background as he struggled with addiction. We will remember him as an interesting, warm, thoughtful, and sometimes difficult, human who loved to make people laugh. His phone calls to friends and family over the last number of years were a lifeline for him, and he hung on as long as he could. He is survived by his son, Miles Luke (Hannah Brash), brothers David Luke and Peter Luke, and sister Alison Luke (Tyler Martin). He is predeceased by parents Morley Richard Luke and Esther Edmée Luke (nee Giles).
Rest in peace, Corby.
A celebration of Corby’s life will be held this fall. Those interested in attending, please email [email protected].
In honour of Corby, donations to the Canadian National Institute for the Blind (CNIB) are welcome.
