Peacefully, with his daughters by his side, on Sunday June 9th, beloved father James Waugh Paterson left this world.
James will be deeply missed by his daughters Lesley and Claire, grand-daughter Helena, and son-in-laws T.J. and Michael. He will be re-united with his beloved wife of 48 years, Barbara and his much loved parents Charles and Janet. James will also be missed by his extended family in Scotland, many friends in the community, and his beloved canine companion Skye.
James was born in Falkirk, Scotland and as a boy loved to play hockey and soccer. He also had an artistic side, and was active in amateur theatre well into his adult life. He volunteered with the Scottish Theatre Royal and Scottish National Ballet and Opera. James emigrated to Canada as a bachelor in 1965 and initially settled in Belleville. He then moved to Toronto where he met his future wife Barbara and they fell in love.
When James and Barbara returned to Scotland they made their family home in Central Scotland. Living in various towns they settled finally in Alloway, Ayrshire. This is where James' love for the poet Robert Burns grew, as this was Burns' birthplace and home. Many remember James as the host of Burns Suppers both at his church and his Masonic lodge. He was fiercely proud of his heritage, but also loved his adopted homeland of Canada deeply, returning to Toronto with his family in 1982. James' long career with the municipal government spanned all over the city and he was proud to be involved in the planning and building of many public buildings and parks in Toronto.
James loved to laugh, be social, and told a great story. The Paterson house was always host to many friends and visiting family. James and his wife Barbara were active in the St. Andrews Church and local Scarborough community. An inspiring public speaker and avid theatre lover his whole life he inspired his daughter Lesley to follow in his footsteps and volunteer in amateur theatre productions.
Till a’ the seas gang dry, my dear,
And the rocks melt wi’ the sun;
I will love thee still, my dear,
While the sands o’ life shall run. - Robert Burns
