Diana Meredith, 63, died suddenly of influenza on January 27th, 2018. Born March 25th, 1954 in Ireland, Diana grew up in Pennsylvania. She then moved to Canada to attend Everdale Free School. Her free and independent spirit led her to Sheridan College, to a BA from U of T, and years later to an MFA from OCADU. She co-created a pottery studio in the Ottawa Valley, wrote and produced plays in Toronto, taught in the “Women of Courage” program at Outward Bound, the “Women in Trades and Technology” program at Seneca College, and in the “Visual and Digital Art” program at Humber College. In the past 15 years she had been part of over 15 group art shows and had seven shows of her own.
Three years ago she was diagnosed with multiple myeloma (bone marrow cancer), followed by breast cancer, and a brain tumour. She came through each phase of her cancers and the taxing treatments heroically, using her experiences to create hugely powerful art and writing about the experience of the cancerous body. Her art work is online at http://dianameredith.com
She is survived by her mother, Brenda Meredith; her brothers, Martin and Rowan; her beloved partner and husband of 21 years, Peter Marmorek; and her dear labradoodle, Rui. Diana’s passionate and powerful embrace of life, nature, and creativity transformed all who knew her. There will be an honouring of her life and spirit at Neighbourhood Unitarian Universalist Congregation, 79 Hiawatha Rd in Toronto on Saturday, Feb. 24th at 2 pm. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Cancer Society. And make art.
