With great sadness, we announce that Carol Ann Garrett Bent passed away at the age of 80 after a brief whirlwind encounter with stomach cancer. Born January 23, 1942, in Cottam, Essex County, Carol would like to thank her incredible parents (predeceased) Evelyn (Ross) Garrett and Willard Robert Garrett for providing her with a loving and supportive home full of generosity, humour and opportunity. She thanks her siblings Bob Garrett and Barbara (Garrett) Broadhead for being among her first and most reliable audiences. She married David Bent (predeceased) in 1969, whose clever, insightful, and most of all, kindhearted personality matched her own. She thanks her children Susan (Bent) Rempel, Christopher Bent, Nancy Bent, and Mary Ann Bent, for letting her shower them with silly love and worry and being by her side when she needed them most. She sends so much love ("I can't express how much") to her Grandchildren Garrett Rempel, Brandon and Mika (Mikelle) Bent and wants them to know what endless joy they brought to her and everyone around them. She thanks her sons-in-law David Rempel, Tyler Dalzell and Miguel Mendoza for being so loving and patient with her and her daughters and for cooperatively becoming part of her growing fan base.
She followed her gut and then her heart to become a social worker. Her career path took her to Windsor, Ottawa, New York (which she referred to as one of the corrective periods in her life). She settled in Toronto, a home that offered attendance at countless Blue Jay games and where she built her legacy as a Supervisor for Child Protection and Family Service. She thanks all the members of the Regent Park team at Children's Aid Society for being so amazing in their commitment to their work and for indulging her in performing sketches at every opportunity. She appreciates how her team gracefully co-produced many goofy ideas. She loved the freedom to pursue her passions in retirement, but she missed having such a captive audience. Carol thanks all her fellow congregants at St. Luke's Anglican church for being such a consistent part of her community and making her feel at home in her retirement. She also would like to thank the countless number of friends who were by her side throughout her life and shared some of her many passions, including travel, theatre, politics, and baseball. Apologies to those cut for time!
Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, June 7, at Giffen-Mack Funeral Home. The Memorial will be held at 12 p.m. on Wednesday, June 8, at St. Luke's Anglican Church in Toronto. Donations should be directed to the Children's Aid Foundation.
