To my Uncle Jimmy, Cousin Vinny and all of the extended Nuzzi and DiStefano families, very sincere and heartfelt condolences from Tucson, Arizona.  I right this on behalf of my Dad, Larry, Sylvia's younger brother, now 86 years old himself.  I have explained to Dad how I could post a special message in this guest book but as we all know, for a majority of people his age, some technology does not "compute" but I know that he is very saddened by the passing of his sister.  Dad has always been a quiet man, not always showing his emotions freely but his mind is still pretty sound and his heart full of love for his family, especially his sister.  

I know that Dad reached out to his sister each year for her birthday and I want to thank you Uncle Jimmy for calling him when you could, especially over the last year or so, letting him know how Aunt Sylvia was doing when she couldn't talk to him.  One of the last times Dad and Aunt Sylvia spoke, I know that they discussed the fact that neither of them ever thought they would be on this earth for so long but we are all the better for it.

As for his memories, I know he has fond ones from his childhood and can remember things from long ago better than recently so when we are all together, we sometimes try to pry into that memory bank a little more.  Usually the stories involve food, typical for an Italian family:-)

For me, I remember my Aunt Sylvia as an incredible hugger who always pinched my cheeks when we went to visit everyone in the "city".  Not sure if anyone pinches cheeks anymore like she did!  And I remember her cooking all the time when we visited . . .  and the sink water running to wash all those dishes.  When Dad, Mom and my sister Lynn went to visit both Aunt Sylvia and Uncle Jimmy after they moved into their home in South Jersey, it was still the same experience.  She whipped up an incredible meal and even though there was a dishwasher, I believe I remember her still pre-washing the dishes in the sink.  

I know you both loved your life there together Uncle Jimmy, from the pool to the garden but more importantly, sharing it with family and friends.  Looking through the photos, one can see what a fun time you both had.  And I can see that Aunt Sylvia did a great job in keeping that tan alive in the pool!

Thank you to all who share memories of her in this guest book as being so far away, we know we have missed some incredible stories about and experiences with Aunt Sylvia and the family. Celebrate her and her spirit . . .

   To Aunt Syl, one of my surrogate moms, Uncle Jim, one of my surrogate dads, and Vinny, one of my surrogate brothers

  Throughout one's life one is influenced positively by many people along the way that lead them to become the person they are.
     I have had many such influential people in my life.  Of course, the most important one is probably my mom.  As you know and understand I never had a dad to influence me in any way, but I honestly never missed that because of all the cousins, aunts and uncles that I saw on a weekly and sometimes daily basis.  So you might say I had the best of several influential mother and father images.
     One of the most memorable is aunt Syl.  She specialized in “tough love”.  You had to be there to appreciate her.  Her most noteworthy and loving accomplishment was what she did on a daily (hourly) basis in helping Jerry to become the beautiful person and human being we all knew and loved.  I observed her with Jerry since he was a very young boy, and I didn't quite understand her methods while I was a young boy myself, but as I grew older and more aware of things I understood just how special this lady was.
     When I visited and spent time with her and the family at supper or overnight, I also learned and experienced some of that tough love.  Some of you who knew me well knew that I tended to be a picky eater when I was a young boy.  Somehow my aunt Sylvia got me to eat things that I never would experiment with or would pick at when home.  It was a combination of fear, respect, and encouragement that got me to overcome some of my bad habits.
     But it was more than just eating habits that I learned.  I learned through observation that discipline applied properly was the most beautiful thing one can do for a child.  She was a person with a firm hand and some firm guiding principles, but many people have those qualities.  It was more in the way she applied those principles that I remember the most.  Even if I (or my cousins) were being disciplined (and trust me we always needed discipline on a daily basis because we often pushed the limits) we could always sense the “love” behind the discipline. I never perceived it as just punishment or stern behavior, but even at that early stage of my life I could understand that it was instruction and teaching.
     As I said, my adult personality and style with my own children was influenced by many sources, but this idea of “tough love” and instruction was always a big part of my behavior and that came mainly from one source….aunt Syl.  I owe her a lot in my development.  I love her a lot.  I was able to spend some quality time with her over the past several years while my mom was going through her health issues.  During that time there was no hint of “tough love”…..just pure love.  The time for tough love had come and gone and she was now just a loving person.  Anyone who came in contact with her in her later life after she had worked her magic with Jerry and Vinny (and me) just knew her as the beautiful, loving person she was.  We will all miss her and her influence on our lives.  Rest in peace my aunt.  You fought the good and righteous fight all your life and won the battle.  You graciously deserved everything good that happened on earth and deserve the eternal peace we all hope to achieve when we leave.

Dear Uncle Jimmy and Vinny, I am so sorry about Aunt Sylvia's passing. The pictures that you posted brought back so many great memories and good times the Nuzzi family had together.  They made me sit back and reminisce with two emotions: happiness and sadness.   I love you and will keep Aunt Sylvia in my thoughts and prayers.
