Robert David Yates, 91, of Toms River passed away on October 18, 2023 peacefully at home surrounded by family.
Born in Detroit to Margaret (Harrington) and Russell Yates, he was the eldest of 13 children. Prior to enlisting in the Navy, Bob worked as an assembler at the Hudson Motor Car Co. in Detroit.
Bob enlisted in the US Navy and served 1949-1952 aboard the destroyers USS Ellis and USS Laffey before and during the Korean War. While in the Navy, he met the love of his life, Anne M. Gallagher, from Newark. After being honorably discharged from the Navy, he moved to NJ and married Anne. They enjoyed 69 years together before her passing earlier this year.
Bob and Anne raised their family in North Arlington before retiring in Toms River 28 years ago. Bob was active in both communities, serving in N.A. on the zoning board, as a Boy Scout leader, and as a board leader for Our Lady Queen of Peace Church and schools. After retirement, Bob and Anne enjoyed traveling the United States and abroad. Bob was active in various Holiday Heights clubs and for 10 years was a volunteer EMT, retiring as captain. His interests included researching his family genealogy and reading, especially historical materials.
Bob was predeceased by his wife Anne and a son William Russell, and sisters Sandra, Patricia, and Geraldine, and brothers Ronald and James. He is survived by his daughter Robin (Steve), son Robert S. (Lynn), daughter-in-law Helen, and grandchildren Alicia (Shaun), Steven, Kimberly, Kelly (Michael), Victoria, Alexandra (Alan), William, and Kaitlyn, and a great granddaughter, Charlotte. He is also survived by sisters Arlene, Karen, Shirley, Linda, Nanette, brothers Thomas, John, and many nieces and nephews. He will be lovingly remembered and missed by family and friends.
A Visitation will be held on Sunday, October 22, 2023 from 2:00 p.m. till 6:00 p.m. at the Quinn-Hopping Funeral Home, 26 Mule RD., Toms River. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, October 23, 2023 10:00 a.m. at St. Maximilian Kolbe RC Church, Toms River, with interment to follow to Brig. Gen. Wm. C. Doyle Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Wrightstown, NJ.
