Robert J. Sabo, 88, of Berkeley Twp. NJ, died Thursday, January 11, 2024 at Rose Garden Nursing and Rehabilitation in Toms River. Born in Jersey City, he lived in Jersey City, before moving to Berkeley Twp. 20 years ago.
He was a veteran of the United States Marine Corps. After the Marines, Robert attended Boston University but left to care for his ailing father. He soon joined the Jersey City Police Department, where he worked his way through the ranks for the next 33 years.
Bob earned his Bachelors Degree in Criminal Justice at the college of John Jay in NY and went on to earn his Masters of Business Administration at Rutgers University. At the same time, Bob worked his way to the top of the JCPD achieving the highest honor of Chief of Police where he continued to serve the public for the following 3 years. After retiring in 1997, he became the Director of Security for the Jersey City School System for 2 years.
Robert was an avid carpenter; he loved to oil paint, especially seascapes. He enjoyed boating, crabbing, fishing and skiing. Anyone who knew Bob saw a man of true integrity, humble yet tremendously talented and highly respected. His amazing sense of humor drew people to him as well as his kindness and sense of adventure. Bob was a born leader. And how he loved animals, especially his cats. He called them “his kids”! And how he loved his grandkids!!!!!
Mr. Sabo is survived by his wife "Mimi" Mary (Flory) and two sons, John and Thomas Sabo; 4 grandchildren, Dean, Jake, Chloe and Kyle Sabo, 2 Step grandchildren, Kaitlyn and Michael Spellman,
A Memorial Gathering will be held on Saturday, January 20, 2024 from 1-4pm at Anderson & Campbell Funeral Home, 703 Main Street, Toms River, with a service at 3:30pm.
