Maria do Carmo Figueiredo Marques

Maria do Carmo Figueiredo Marques was born on February 12, 1922, in Vouzela, Viseu, Portugal. She and her sister were raised in the countryside by her widowed mother, grandfather and two aunts. She met her husband, Jose de Almeida Marques, and they married on July 19, 1947. Together with her husband and children, she came to the United States in 1960 to begin a new life. She worked as a seamstress and quickly became a forewoman for her team. Even after she retired, she continued to take pleasure in sewing, knitting and crocheting for family and friends. Along with her sewing skills, she was an amazing cook.  If you weren’t hungry, when you arrived, she made sure you were fed anyway. Through her caring and selfless nature, Maria do Carmo, along with her loving husband, raised 5 children, 12 grandchildren, 14 great-children and was Vovo (Grandma) to countless others. A full house was a happy house in her mind.  The more the merrier.  There was always enough food and love to go around. She was happiest at home - cooking, gardening, sewing and making sure everyone was content. Outside the home, she enjoyed pulling all-nighters playing the slot machines in Atlantic City and being at the beach in the summer. Maria was widowed in 2008 after 61 years of marriage.  She continued to enjoy life surrounded by family and friends. She is survived by her children Regina Santos, Clara Albuquerque, Joseph Marques and wife Nancy, Isabel Clarke, Margaret Ferrao and husband Joe. Grandchildren Cristina Neves (Carlos), Anthony Albuquerque (Mariana), Monica Azzi (Ziad), Brigitte McGuire (Thomas), Rachel Abrusci, Jason Albuquerque, Benjamin Albuquerque, Andrea Benedetti, Steven Ferrao, Deborah Ferrao, Gabriela Albuquerque-Morocho and Nina Marques.  Great grandchildren Dylan, Jeremy, Thomas, Joseph, River, Amelia, Nia, Camila, Vincenzo, Santino, Leo, Adriel, Raymond and Maelle. Maria lived a full and happy life and left a legacy of family and friends. She will be dearly missed.
