Born in Brooklyn, NY James moved to Toms River, where he graduated high school. James was a Korean War Navy Veteran who proudly served his country. He attended Our Lady of Angels School, Brooklyn Prep Jesuit High School, Toms River High School and Philadelphia College of Textiles and Science, earning his degree in Textile Engineering. After graduation, James married his loving wife Alice in 1957 and resided in East Brunswick, NJ where they lived for 35 years and raised their children. James was a Vice President of Sales and Marketing with Joshua L. Bailey, Manhattan and worked for them for 40 years. James earned five Athletic Awards growing up playing Football and Baseball, and even tried out for the NY Yankees in Jr High. Fifteen years ago, he and Alice decided to settle in Toms River.
James enjoyed playing Ping Pong, Pool and Golf. He was an avid Surf Fisherman and loved to Sail and Swim. He was a 4th degree Knights of Columbus Council 4969, and an Usher at St. Joseph’s RC Church, Toms River.
Surviving are James wife of 63 years Alice (McDermott) and his five children; sons; James Kelly and his wife Lisa, John Kelly and his wife April, daughters, Angela Holzapfel and her husband John, Maura Kelly, Kathleen Mechler and her husband Thomas, his nine grandchildren and his twelve great grandchildren.
Visitation will be Sunday December 13, 2020 from 2pm-5pm at the Quinn-Hopping Funeral Home, 26 Mule Rd., Toms River, NJ. A Mass will be celebrated on Monday December 14, 2020 10 am at St. Joseph’s RC Church, Toms River, NJ. Cremation will be private.
