Irene Fielding Brown, 94, passed away at her home in Holiday Heights, Toms River, NJ, on October 1, 2022. She was born to Mary Ellen and Simeon Fielding on July 2, 1928, in Kearny, NJ, where she grew up. She was the editor of the Kearny High School newspaper and captain of the cheerleaders.
Always a leader in community affairs, she has been an active church member, Girl Scout leader, PTA organizer, and columnist for many local publications. She and her husband, Jack, raised their family in Iselin, NJ, until moving to Toms River in retirement. While in Iselin, Irene took the reins of the Crossroads Girl Scout Council as its first president.
Known as one of the “pioneers” of Holiday Heights in Toms River, Irene was elected to serve on the HOA Board of Directors for over thirty years. She retired from that position of service at the age of 93.
Irene was an avid reader and enjoyed sewing, knitting, quilting, embroidering, doing crossword puzzles, and playing Rummy Cube and Mahjong with her friends. Writing news articles was a passion. Her sharp mind made her an engaging conversationalist. Her memory for details was outstanding. Her cherished family brought her the most joy. As the matriarch of the family, she gave unconditional love and support and was the “glue” that held everyone together. She is deeply missed.
Irene was predeceased by her husband, Jack Markey Brown, the love of her life, and by her son, Jack Markey Brown II. She is survived by her daughter, Donna-Su Zeglarski, her son-in-law, Robert Zeglarski, grandchildren- Lori Schiavone (Joe), Robert Zeglarski (Megan), Jennifer Brown, Jack Markey Brown III (Yetzabel), and Amy Alton (Shane).
