Gary was born on June 29, 1943, in Williamsport, PA, to Seymore Weiss and Leah Figlin. He graduated from Penn State University and remained a big fan of the Nittany Lions throughout his life. He served in the US Army as a Specialist Five during the Vietnam War.
In his prime, Gary ran marathons, sailed catamarans, and did martial arts. Even throughout his 70s, he enjoyed long walks and could outpace people 50 years younger. He was highly articulate and witty, and his friends and family affectionately called him the “king of sarcasm.”
As an avid reader of fiction, non-fiction, and The New Yorker, his passion for learning was infectious. He could go from soft-spoken to inspiring and informative without a moment’s notice. In addition, Gary took a genuine interest in others’ passions. A clear sign of how much he cared for those around him was that he would learn more about their interests during his free time so he could better discuss them the next time they met.
But most of all, Gary was a devoted father, grandfather, and brother who always prioritized his family. No matter how busy he was, he always had time to lend an ear or bake some comfort brownies. His heart was big, and his compassion ran deep.
Gary is preceded in death by his parents and his eldest daughter, Sidra Barney.
He is lovingly remembered by his daughter, Leah Weiss, brother, David Weiss, sister, Penny Weiss, and grandson, Chase Barney.
