Garrett "Gary" O'Melia, 71, of Lakewood, NJ, passed away on Monday, September 30, 2024, surrounded by his loving family and friends. Born and raised in Jersey City, Gary moved down to Ocean County as a young man, eventually establishing deep roots in Point Pleasant Boro, where he called home for many years. After spending some time in Pennsylvania later in life, he returned to New Jersey 7 years ago to be closer to his children
Gary dedicated nearly 20 years of his life as a police officer with the Point Pleasant Boro Police Department, a career that brought him immense pride and fulfillment. Following his law enforcement career, he transitioned to security work until his retirement. As a proud Army veteran of the Korean and Vietnam Wars, Gary earned numerous accolades for his dedicated service to his country.
A passionate historian, Gary had a particular love for all things related to World War II. His interests also extended to astronomy and meteorology, often sparking fascinating conversations. An avid music lover, he found joy in listening to his favorite bands, particularly Black Sabbath and AC/DC. Whether with a book in hand or music playing in the background, Gary immersed himself in the stories and sounds he cherished.
Known for his warm and kind heart, Gary had a remarkable ability to connect with people, making friends wherever he went. His compassion and generosity left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him.
Predeceased by his parents, Patrick O'Melia and Evelyn Hawks, Gary is survived by his beloved children, Kelly O'Melia and Garrett O'Melia, along with many family members and friends whose lives he touched.
Services will be private, and a Celebration of Gary's Life will be held at a later date. His spirit will live on in the hearts of all who knew him, and he will be deeply missed.
