Catherine M. Smith, age 97, formerly of South River, N.J., recently of Brick, passed away on Thursday, May 30, 2013 at Ocean Medical Center in Brick. Born May 16, 1916, in Sayreville, “Cass” spent most of her life in South River; her retired years in Monroe Twp.; and her later years in Brick to be near her family. She was employed by the Spotswood Education Association as a permanent substitute for fifteen years, as well as offering help in adjacent districts. She belonged to the Women’s Auxiliary of the Lion’s Club and was active in the Music Center, both in South River. She was also an avid golfer, playing in many tournaments, and a devoted bridge club player.
She is predeceased by her husband, Arthur S. Smith; her parents, Louise and Alpheus Franklin; her brothers, Woodrow Maxien and Edward and William Franklin; and her sister, Dorothy Wisneski. Her death finalizes her lineage.
She is survived by her daughter, Mary L. Thornborough of Toms River; and her son, Arthur T. Smith, Sr. of Bluffton, SC. Also surviving are four grandchildren and their spouses: Arthurs T. Smith, Jr. and Christine of Howell; Richard C. Thornborough, Jr. and Lisa of Lacey; Kevin T. Smith and Courtney of Rowlett, Texas; and Heather Cooke and Bernard of Brick. She also leaves behind nine great grandchildren. After her husband died in 1983, she became the anchor for the entire family, and as Mom and Nan, she gave so much and was truly loved by all.
Catherine’s wish is for a private cremation; however, a Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. on June 10, 2013 at St. Joseph’s Church, 685 Hooper Ave. Toms River.
