Peter and I worked on so many RMI projects together. Not too long ago, I worked one of their events at Martin's West. As I was sitting outside of the ballroom in the registration area, I looked down the sunlit hall and could imagine Peter walking in with a smile that was just as bright. He was one of those few that we call "good to know you" people and really mean it. He will never be forgotten.

I’ve known Pete since 6th grade.  He was such a good guy and I just saw this and I’m so sad.  He really loved his wife and 2 daughters.  I wish them the best.  Pete will be greatly missed!  I love you Pete.

I am deeply saddened by the passing of Peter.  Peter was my colleague, friend,  guide and a team leader and we worked very closely in the RMI program.   I knew Peter for the past 20 years and found him always a deeply caring, compassionate and a friend in need for all.  I was drawn by his sense of humor, fairness to all and on top, a great communicator.  Even if some one may have wronged him in projects/programs, he had a way to resolve the situation in a very amicable manner that even the person who was faulty could find his problem and come around next time.  He had that charisma to make people do only good things.  Even in his suffering from his illness in the past year, he did not make people focus on his condition and continued to show the positivity and compassion to others.  This the specialty that I will remember about Peter for ever.   His soul is pure and will be sure to guide Mary and the daughters.  I take a whole lot from his life as a colleague/friend to us and as a loving father to his daughters and a husband to Mary.  May his soul Rest In Peace and guide the family today and always. 

I got to know Peter back in the early 70s in Wainscott, N.Y. a small village on the  eastern end of  Long Island. I lived there year round and Pete had begun to  spend summers there in his families home near the beach.  We met and became fast friends. I have fond memories of riding our bikes all over Wainscott, playing baseball almost every evening, gathering up drift wood and building  a fire on the beach in the evenings. Those were great times. We had a mutual love of baseball, me being a huge Yankee fan and Pete being a Texas Rangers fan.  You may ask 'Why a Texas Rangers Fan'?   the reason was loyalty. his beloved Washington Senators  moved to Arlington, Texas in 1972 and became the Texas Rangers; We use to have a blast going to Yankee Stadium on several occasions (which was over a 2 hour drive) but well worth it since we loved the experience seeing the games live.  I also remember Pete had built this tree house on his Dad's property in Wainscott.  It was like something right out of 'The Little Rascals' we loved it. Pete actually lived in that tree house one summer when his Dad had rented the house.  I remember we were all hanging out in that tree house listening to Richard Nixon's resignation on the radio, incredible! Many fond memories, playing baseball, body surfing, beach fires, riding our bicycles all over Wainscott. Good Stuff.   We were all quite fortunate to have shared those times together.  It all went by too fast.

Peter was a very kind neighbor. We saw him frequently, either at the fence or walking around the neighborhood. I loved to hear him tell us about the projects he worked on, always saying he had his girls (including Mary) in mind. My favorite story he told was how there was a big snow a few years ago. He worked in the back yard to make a great run for sledding on, complete with a curved wall to keep the kids from running into the fence. He received so much enjoyment in the work, knowing how much fun they would have. When I think of Peter, I will remember how much he loved his family.

As a family, we continue to pray for you and the girls, Mary.  May you feel wrapped in God’s arms.

Peter and I traveled in overlapping circles. Our paths often crossed. Peter was the perfect gentleman and always the professional. No matter when or where you saw Peter, he was uplifting and genuine. He was an advocate for the manufacturing industry and arguably one of the best people connectors I have met. Peter knew everyone on sight and everyone knew Peter. He welcomed everyone with a smile and an outstretched hand of fellowship. I am fortunate to call him a friend and I am a better man for having known him. Peter made a positive impression with everyone he met and we should all aspire to be remembered as fondly as we remember Peter.  He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.    

I first met Peter through RMI, as I was looking to connect with its members. I remember calling RMI for the first time, connecting with Peter, and telling my story of what I wanted to do. So often, when you ask people to be a conduit of businesses, there is always that moment of skepticism. Peter was so open that day, so honest, so welcoming. We went on to have a fruitful relationship with a focus of bringing value to other people. Peter had an unbelievable talent for always being available, connecting the dots, and making business happen.  I recently reconnected with Peter at the end of 2020, getting his health update, and he was so candid, matter of fact and above most, courageous. Together with Mike Galiazzo, they drove so much innovation and progress with Maryland manufacturing. Peter was such an important figure for the State of Maryland. My sincere and deepest condolences to Peters family, and extended family made up of the great number of professionals Peter touched with his magic. He will be dearly missed, but never forgotten. Frank and I were privileged to work with Peter in the Vision Cafe at Church of the Nativity.  How we loved our Sundays sharing our love of each other, the parish and the Vision Cafe visitors.  Peter and my husband,  worked at the coffee station together and had many wonderful talks in-between customers.  I worked with Katie and Gracie at the donut counter.   We grieve along with you, Mary and your beautiful family.  Peter's time on earth was too brief - and it was powerful. God bless you all.  Dori and Frank Batavick


In the short time I have known Peter and has family, I have been very impressed with the love and joy they expressed with each other and shared with others.  I have enjoyed knowing Peter, and Mary and Gracie. They have brought wonderful memories to me.
Peter will certainly be missed. I will continue to pray for Peter, and his family in this time of sorrow.

I met Peter ten years ago and since then have worked closely with him on the RMI Energy Program. It was a pleasure to work with such a dedicated, insightful, and passionate professional as Peter. He was a great communicator who could readily see things from another person’s perspective. He had a positive gracious personality and he genuinely cared about other people. 

In this time of sadness as we honor the memory of Peter Gourlay, it is important to remember that he had a life well lived. He was well liked and respected. He was able to travel around the world and able to work in a field that he found rewarding. He grew up in a large family and was a dedicated family man. He was blessed with two lovely daughters whom he was very proud of and brought him great joy. He lived an authentic life with the faith, peace of mind, and fortitude to always do the right thing, and to be an inspiration to all of us.  

Perhaps the best testament to honor Peter is that he loved much and was loved much in return. Our world is a better place because Peter Gourlay lived here. He will certainly be missed, but definitely not forgotten. Farewell my colleague and friend. May God bless your family during this difficult time.

My heart goes out to the Gourlay Family who have lost a wonderful man... a cousin to me, also a brother, father, husband and friend to so many he cared about.   I feel blessed and fortunate to have known Peter and have special memories that I will treasure forever.

Sending my deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of Peter Gourlay.  Peter was a dear friend, a mentor and a client for more than 11 years, he was my very first client when we worked on his Maryland-Asia Environmental Partnerships.  He was also a mentor to me in many ways and I will always remember his voice, and it always motivate me to be positive and strong.  

I consider myself fortunate to have gotten to know Peter over the course of the last ten years through work and more importantly over that time to get to know. him as a person and as a friend. Whether at work events or outside of work at his daughter's basketball games, I can't recall a time that Peter didn't have a smile on his face. He was genuinely one of the good guys, his enthusiasm for life was contagious and his genuine pride and love for his family and friends was unmatched.  Peter will be missed by many because he was loved by everyone he met. My thoughts and prayers go out to Mary, Katy and Gracie and all of Peter's friends and family.

To the Gourlay Family - we grieve with you for the loss of our dear friend, Peter.

Peter was a person full of energy and positive vibes, and always ready to help anyone. He was a humble gentleman that I will miss his friendship greatly.

May God grant the Gourlay family strength as you go through this sorrowful time.

Fifteen years ago we met the Gourlay family when we became next door neighbors. They were kind, friendly people. Peter always smiled or waved, and we were available to help each other with picking up mail/paper or watching over one another's homes when either we or they were away. As their girls grew, it was evident Peter enjoyed being involved with their sports and other activities and that he loved his family very much. He spoke proudly of Katy's and Gracie's accomplishments and activities. Their dog, Leo, brought excitement to their family and to ours. When Peter walked Leo daily past our home, our dog, Daisy, would run barking from window to window, trying to see Leo and Peter from every angle she could. It always made us smile because we knew exactly who was going by and their location. Peter understood what was important to children and treated them with kindness and respect. When our three young granddaughters planned a "doggy" birthday party for Daisy, they invited "Mr. Peter" and Leo as the honored guests. Peter graciously accepted the invitation and arrived at the appointed time with Leo, making it a very special occasion for all! When Peter was diagnosed with a life-threatening condition, he pressed on. His daily walks with Leo continued for months and he focused on making things better for others. Early on summer mornings, we would often see him in his backyard working at establishing a wild flower garden or doing other gardening/yard work. His focus  was on what was best for his family and what he needed to do to get well. He wasn't ever going to give-in or give-up! We prayed for Peter and saw his faith growing stronger and stronger. He once wrote, "I am very much in line with the Lord's priorities for my life." Peter fought a long and fierce battle until January 25th when the Lord took him home. He will be greatly missed! Our heartfelt condolences to Mary, Katy, Gracie, and all the Gourlay family and friends. 

To Mary, Kathy, and Gracie Gourlay and other the members of your family, thank you for sharing Peter with us, particularly this past year. You know him best and therefore have a better understanding of his strength, bravery, and love of life and people. Even so, to us, as colleagues and friends, those qualities seemed to grow stronger over the months. What we experienced was a man of unwavering determination, positivity, and support. We worked together on RMI projects day-to-day. I will miss him as will everyone that I’ve spoken with this past week. My sincerest condolences.  Chris Plater

Peter will be dearly missed.  Whenever we worked together, I knew he was always thinking about how he could help others.  His efficiency was fantastic, but most important was that he would always make a difference. People knew that he would always work to do what was right, not what was easier. He will not be forgotten. His smile and good nature will be missed, but I'm sure those of us who knew Peter will keep him in our heart and continue his mission to make the world a better place. Rest peacefully my friend.

I met Peter at an RMI event in Elkton in 2019.  While I didn't know him for very long, in the short time we worked together I have no doubt that Peter approached everything in life with passion and dedication.  He supported our company every step of the way and was an advocate for us beyond the energy grant with the county.  From the bottom of our hearts, we wish to express our sincere condolences to his entire family for his tragic loss.  

I can't remember when I first met Peter, but I feel he has been a part of my life and my business from the beginning.  I will remember that he was always glad to see me and always greeted me with a smile.  In a crowd he always made a point to seek me out and say Hi!

For the many years knowing and working with Peter on various RMI events and activities, and then for the past year or so through his incredible ordeal, the one thing that stuck out the most for me was his amazing and contagious level of positivity.  He affected many with his positivity, so much so that Mike G. and I call it - the 'Gourlay Way'.  I hope to lead my life following what I was learned from Peter - and do it the Gourlay Way.

Peter was one of the good guys; one of the best.  He was always ready to lend a hand and truly made a difference with his life.  He will be missed.  May God comfort all who mourn. 

Peter Gourlay spoke to our better angels. He loved all and was loved by all. Always positive and hopeful, Peter’s warm and wonderful smile inspired us to be better people. Peter, a dear friend of remarkable loveliness, was a beautiful man because of his belief in the dignity and worth of others. He was God’s messenger of goodness who “walked the talk” of his Christian faith. As he struggled against cancer, his message to everyone was to “be nice”, lift others up and applaud their successes.
Peter was our angel on earth. He was my best friend. His kindness and brilliance made me a better person. A Champion of Human Dignity and Respect, Peter Gourlay’s spirit lives in all who were touched by his love. 
Hoorah to a great man and Marine who always achieved significance by enlightening our hearts and souls.


Peter had an amazing smile. Very comforting. He had an ease and serenity that is unique and warm. 

His poise and wisdom were a beacon for all who met him. 

Peter was a gentleman and pleasure to be associated with......I will miss him greatly.

Peter was the ultimate example of the best human values . He retained his most positive attitude until the last minutes of life and his faith , commitment to improve and love of everyone around him made the world a better place.

I am so very saddened by this news. I knew Peter well in 8th & 9th grade in Morocco and we stayed in touch for a few years.  He was my first big "crush" and I even skipped school to watch him play tennis! We had lost touch until recently and I was very sorry to hear of his battle with such a rare form of cancer and followed his progress closely. He had the love, prayers and support of so many and fought hard for the sake of his family. My heart goes out to you all. May you find some solace in your faith and wonderful memories with Peter.

From the beginning, Peter has been the kind of brother that will listen to you at the end of a long tired day with the kind of open-hearted good humor that has always been him. Love you, miss you so much. 

We knew Peter from our school days in Morocco. He was memorable  and kind even in high school. We anxiously followed Peter during his difficult  surgery and are saddened to hear of his passing. He will be missed. With tears in our eyes, we say goodbye for now. Love to his family.  May your hearts heal soon. ♥️

Mary, Katy and Gracie, you are in my family’s thoughts and prayers.  Peter will me missed by so many.  Peter’s love and pride for his girls was so evident.  I loved hearing his ‘hoorahs ’ from the stands when Gracie made a great play on the court!  And his intensity on the softball field was unmatched.  I loved watching him beam with pride as he watched her pitch! Erin loved playing for him.  I’m sure he will be watching over you and the girls from heaven smiling at all they will accomplish. I have a fond memory of Peter on Halloween at the Timonium Elementary School parade as the man in the yellow hat with Gracie as his curious George.  They were adorable together!  What a dedicated father and friend we came to know over the years at basketball games, holiday gatherings, and church.

Dear Mary,  My heart felt sorrow goes out to you and your two girls over the loss of your dear Peter.  It has been awhile since I have seen you all, but always enjoyed the picture cards at Christmas.  
I remember Mary, when you first met Peter at Bethany Beach and it was like a dream that you two met.  You knew he was brought into your life by God and you were meant to be together.  You have two beautiful children together, and I am sure have had a very fulfilled life.

When Katy and Gracie were toddlers and tykes I went over to their house at least once a week; it was very obvious early on how much his family meant to Peter.   His yeoman efforts over the past year to extend his life as much as possible was the latest illustration of that.
