On Monday, April 21, 2025, James Robert “Bob” Horney, age 89, passed peacefully surrounded by his loving family. He was the beloved husband of Joan E. Horney (nee Larmore) of nearly 69 years; loving father of Deborah E. Kleim (Timothy), Michael R. Horney (Kathy), Linda J. Standiford, and Ann M. January (Greg); cherished grandfather of Heather Sawyer, Katherine Cross, Timothy Kleim, Kelly Standiford, Mandy Standiford, and Josie January; treasured great-grandfather of Hannah Sawyer, Michael Cross and Natalie Cross; dear brother of Grace E. Smith (Norman), the late Charles R. Horney and his living wife Kathy, the late Carl J. Horney and the late Raymond J. Horney; uncle of many nieces and nephews.
Bob had a deep love for travel, a passion that led him to earn his pilot’s license and take spontaneous day trips to Ocean City, MD and Atlantic City, NJ with his longtime friend Jack. Some of his most cherished adventures, however, were with his beloved wife Joan. Together, they explored the world—from the sun-soaked islands of the Caribbean to the breathtaking landscapes of Alaska. Despite not being fond of the cold, Bob always said the sights made it worth it. In their later years, they became true snowbirds, heading south every winter to enjoy the warmth and each other’s company.
A natural handyman, Bob could fix just about anything, and in retirement, he found joy in the simple ritual of washing the cars every Saturday. He was meticulous—always opening the doors, hood, gas tank cover, and trunk to clean every last corner with care. Retirement also gave Bob the chance to explore new creative outlets, and he took up stained glass as a hobby, crafting beautiful pieces that reflected both patience and artistry. He was also a devoted and active member of St. Joseph Parish in Cockeysville, where his faith and sense of community were a guiding presence in his life. More than anything, he was a devoted husband, a proud father, and a loving grandfather and great-grandfather, whose presence brought comfort and strength to those around him.
