Tom was born December 12, 1925 in Portland, OR to Charles and Hilda (Marty) Turner. He attended high school in Depoe Bay, OR. During World War II, Mr. Turner served on the transport ship USS La Porte, and was later stationed in Washington and at Bethesda Naval Hospital in Maryland during the Korean Conflict. In March 1947, Tom married Rose Marie Haikka in Portland. He attended Multnomah College, working all during his schooling, and served as a city sidewalk inspector in Portland for thirty years.
Tom and Maree enjoyed travel - several cruises through the Panama Canal and annual spring trips to Hawaii were highlights - and visits to their house in Cannon Beach, which they owned for over fifty years. He liked to hunt and fish, and enjoyed playing golf, with a hole-in-one at Sun Lakes in Arizona a high point. He was also an accomplished woodcarver, particularly of bird figures.
Mr. Turner had performed well over one thousand hours of service as a Shriner volunteer, and played horn with the Shriner Oriental Band. He was also an Associate Guardian with Job's Daughters Bethel #5, a Master Mason (in 1976) at Washington Lodge #76, and also served with the Elks and American Legion in Cannon Beach.
Mr. Turner will be missed by his wife of 66 years, Maree Turner of Tigard;
children Linda Morris of Newport, Karen Fresn of Seattle, WA, Gary Turner and wife Diane of Beaverton, and Susan Bradley and husband Scott of Phoenix, AZ;
brother Dr. Donald Turner, USAF Colonel, Ret. and wife Jean of Vancouver, WA;
grandchildren Jesse Fresn, Kai Fresn, Graham Fresn, Breanna Moore, Melissa Miner, Taylor Bradley, Geoffrey Turner, and Michael Turner;
great-grandchildren Annabelle Turner, Sofia Fresn, William Fresn, and Aliyah Moore;
a niece, Kathy Geissenger, and nephew, David;
and by numerous cousins.
A memorial service will take place at the Al Kader Shrine Center, 25100 SW Parkway Avenue in Wilsonville at 11 AM on Friday, October 11, 2013. Mr. Turner will be laid to rest privately with military honors at Willamette National Cemetery.
