Joseph Fredrick Gooley passed away peacefully in his sleep, surrounded by family, at the age of 96 on June 26, 2019. He was born on January 21, 1923 in Moscow, Idaho to Fredrick and Mary Gooley, and was raised in Mt. Angel, Oregon. He enlisted in the US Navy in 1943 and served in the Pacific until 1946. While serving in the Navy, he received a Commendation and Commendation Ribbon for Meritorious Service during the assault on enemy held islands in the West Central Pacific in June 1944 from the Commander in Chief of the US Pacific Fleet. After serving in the Navy, Joe graduated Cum Laude from the University of Portland in 1948 with a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, and he played the trombone as a member of the UP band. He then went to work for US National Bank, where he would spend his entire career until retiring in 1986 as an Assistant Vice President in Commercial Loans.
He was a Fourth Degree member of the Knights of Columbus, and a long time member of St. John Fisher Parish. Joe was also a member of Toastmasters International and the Optimist Club of Eugene, Oregon, and he volunteered with St. Vincent de Paul and Catholic Charities. An avid runner and woodworker, he also enjoyed tennis and golf, and he loved the Oregon Coast. Most importantly, he devoted his life to his faith and his family.
He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Kathlene O’Donnell Gooley, daughters Janet Lindgren (Kevin) of Austin, Texas and Carol Smith of Portland, Oregon and son Kevin Gooley of Portland, Oregon; grandchildren Scott Lindgren (Katherine), Stephanie Tanguma (Brian), Emily Lindgren (Jay), Molly Laney (Brandon) and Nicole Smith; great grandchildren Cameron, Elijah, Brayden and Grayson; and sister Rosella McKay of St. Paul, Oregon. Joe was preceded in death by three brothers and one sister.
A rosary and funeral mass will be held on Tuesday, July 2, 2019 at 11:00 am at St. John Fisher Catholic Church at 7007 SW 46th Avenue, Portland Oregon 97219. Internment with Military Honors will follow at Mt. Calvary Catholic Cemetery, 333 SW Skyline Blvd., Portland Oregon 97221.
