He was predeceased by his grandparents, Robert and Vivian Scherrer.
Jacob was born in Portland, Oregon on August 28, 1990. In 1996, he and his family moved from Milwaukie, Oregon to Tigard, Oregon where he attended school and graduated with honors from Tigard High in June of 2009. He was the only senior in a class of over 600 to be awarded the Robert Ragel, $50,000.00 Academic Scholarship. Jacob graduated, with honors, from Oregon State University in December of 2013. While at Oregon State University, Jacob earned degrees in accounting, finance and a minor in international business. In 2014, Jacob passed all parts of the Certified Public Accountants Exam (CPA) in his first sitting, with an average score of 85%. After graduation from college, Jacob began his career with MOSS ADAMS LLP. In 2016, he came to work in the family business, Dale W. Engle CPA, P.C.. In 2022, he became the corporate controller for Point Blank Distributing, which was his self-described “dream” job.
From his first breath, he was a life force to be reckoned with. He was an active, high-energy child who loved all types of sports and activities. He attained a high brown belt in karate, he played youth soccer, basketball and football. While in high school he was on the wrestling team. His athletic activities included, water skiing, wake boarding, riding motorcycles (both dirt and street), riding his Banshee, and snow-boarding. There were many family camping trips to Pelton Dam, Prineville Reservoir, Sand Lake and the Oregon Dunes in Hauser, Oregon. For many years, Jacob and his dad brought in the new year snowboarding New Year’s Eve on Mt. Hood. As a bucket list event, he and his dad ran the 2009 Portland Marathon together. Jacob’s physical fitness was very important to him. He enjoyed running, cycling, riding his Peloton bike and weight training. He was the best work out partner his dad ever had.
As an “only”, Jacob and his mom (“Mang”) had such a special relationship. He so loved his Mang and would take her out to dinner or schedule massages for her, just because. Each greeting began with a bear hug and when they would part, he always told her how much he loved her. Jacob will always be her “baby”.
Jacob had a passion for classic cars. He had his grandfather’s 1972 Chevelle and had recently purchased his Uncle “Poodies” 1969 Ford Torino GT Sport Roof. Jacob and his dad had many “what a guy could do” conversations about what Jacob was going to do with each of them, and to honor Jacob’s wishes, his dad will restore them exactly as Jacob wanted.
While at Oregon State University, Jacob participated in a foreign exchange student program, spending five months in Bangkok, Thailand attending Chulalongkorn University. While there, he made life-long friendships with other students from around the world. His trip to Thailand sparked a passion for international travel, as Jacob traveled to 19 different countries, and at the time of his passing, had trips planned for travel to Thailand and Sweden. It also created a passion for cooking. Jacob was an amazing cook and had no fear putting together Thai and other dishes including Beef Wellington for Christmas 2021. He was the Engle Family Official Gravy Maker, as it turn out perfectly every time.
Jacob will be remembered for his passion for life, his love of family, his no quit attitude, his amazing smile, and his heart and kindness for and towards others. He lived a life time in his 32 years, and it was a life well lived.
A celebration of Jacob’s life will be held at 11:00 am January 7, 2023, at Lake Bible Church in Lake Oswego Oregon. All friends and family are encouraged to wear Oregon State, Chicago Bear/Kansas City Chiefs gear in Jacob’s honor.
